Young at Art Museum and Broward County Library Celebrate Grand Opening
The opening of the new Young at Art Museum and Broward County Library brings a new era of arts education and entertainment to South Florida. On May 5, at 9:30 a.m., the doors to the spectacular 55,000 square-foot, LEED-certified museum and library in Davie will open with a weekend of fun-filled celebrations and festivities for the whole family. The new museum and library utilizes the powerful synergy between art and reading to create a one-of-a-kind learning experience for all ages.
“Through the joint development of this facility and its many cooperative programs, this is a groundbreaking partnership and one that we know will be a model for other museums and libraries throughout the country,” says Robert Cannon, Director of Broward County Libraries. “This unique facility will provide cooperative, hands-on computer and reading literacy programs and art education activities for families in South Florida as well as visitors.”
Young at Art Museum, located at 751 S.W. 121 Avenue in Davie, will feature four permanent, themed galleries. GreenScapes, which emphasizes nature and the environment; CultureScapes, which celebrates cultural diversity through contemporary artists; Wonderscapes, dedicated to childhood development through art, literacy and play; and ArtScapes, a thematic journey through art history. Visitors can also enjoy a National Traveling Exhibition Gallery, Teen Center and Recording Studio, a preschool classroom and the Artist-in-Residence Studios/Installations, which will feature artists such as Kenny Scharf, Pablo Cano and Edouard Duval Carrie. The unique YAA Institute will offer age-appropriate classes in painting, drawing, photography and more to Museum visitors.
The 10,000 square-foot Broward County Library will offer a full range of library resources including books and other printed materials, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and more. Staffed by Broward County librarians, it will offer all of the amenities and features of other Broward County Libraries. While there is an admission fee for the Young at Art Museum facility, there is never a charge to enter this or any Broward County Library.
On opening day, parking will be available offsite only and attendees will be shuttled in by courtesy vans. Please follow the signs guiding visitors to the designated off-site parking locations.

A new partnership was launched with Keiser University to provide Information Technology students to volunteer and assist West Regional Library‘s customers with access to computer services in its Computer Technology Center. The Computer Intern Volunteer Program allows students the opportunity to use their computer science skills while helping to improve service to the public at that library location. Students are trained to access frequently used databases and to provide friendly customer service.
Volunteer interns Michlon Hartford, Wilfred Derviste, Bradley Chang and Steve Elevus have made a four month commitment to the program and completed their service at the end of March.
“Some amazing things happen when you volunteer,” says Wilfred Derviste, one of the Keiser University volunteers. “You learn about yourself, have fun and enjoy a renewed passion for life that gives you more purpose and meaning.”
Students can earn community service hours by volunteering at their local library, while adults can become a literacy volunteer, join their local Friends of the Library group, or become a docent. For more information on volunteering at Broward County Libraries, please call or visit your local library.
“Volunteering gives me a sense of purpose,” adds Derviste. “Many people have helped me without asking for anything in return. This is my way of giving back.”
