According to a 2010 National Health Interview Survey from the Center for Disease Control, only 52% of men 18 and older meet the federal physical activity guidelines for aerobic activity. More surprisingly, 22% of men over 18 currently smoke and 31.5% have five or more drinks in one day at least once in the last year. While the life expectancy gap between men and women is getting smaller, men still need to pay careful attention to their bodies.
Men’s Health Month is celebrated each June to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. You can get free information on male health issues at Broward County Library. From print resources such as books, magazines and periodicals to work-out and exercise DVDs to online resources available only to library customers, you can find information on men’s health conditions, risks and solutions. This month both Stirling Road Branch Library and West Regional Library will have book displays with materials focusing on men’s health.
