Subseries 3.1: Agents and publishing activities, 1948-1988 and n.d. (0.45 linear feet)

This subseries consists of all correspondence directly related to Shaara's writing and publishing activities, including that with publishers, editors, employees of popular and literary periodicals, and literary agents. In addition, this series includes professionals who were involved in the production of Shaara's literary works as illustrators, photographers, and cartographers. Of particular note is the correspondence from Donald T. Pitcher, who drew the maps of Gettysburg for Shaara's novel, The Killer Angels.

Over the years, Shaara was represented by many literary agents: Frederick Pohl (1952-1953), Harry Altshuler (1953-1961), Harold Matson Company (1964-1965), McIntosh and Otis (1966-1971), Scott Meredith Literary Agency (1971-1973, and 1980s), John Cushman Associates (1973-1976), Sterling Lord Agency, Inc. (1976-1977), and Lou Reda Productions (1977-1979). Several individuals appear under more than one corporate entity, most notably James O'Shea Wade. Wade was the editorial director at David McKay Company, Inc. and worked with Shaara on The Killer Angels project. Although Wade served at several publishing companies, he kept up correspondence with Shaara. The David McKay file provides key information on the process of editing, publishing, and promoting The Killer Angels (1974).

File folders primarily contain incoming letters interspersed with some letters from Shaara. In the finding aid, file folder descriptions with the star symbol symbol indicate that letter(s) from Shaara are included. For the sake of continuity, correspondence sent to the author's literary agent from publishers, editors, and magazines about Shaara was placed under the addressed literary agent. Materials are arranged alphabetically by corporate or personal name with the names of all corporate correspondents listed in parentheses. When corporate names changed over time (i.e., Fantasy and Science Fiction, Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction), all the variant names appear in the entry.

See Series I: Writings for correspondence placed with particular manuscripts: "Billy Boy"; "Corky the Prill"; "The Chang Po Effect"; "The Dark Angel"; "Debut"; "Fifty Percent"; "Girl in the Mirror"; "Groomsday"; The Herald; "The Herald of the Lightning"; "Last Ticket, Last Train"; "Letter From Damascus"; "The Man on the White Horse"; "No Game for Boys"; "Nothing To It"; "Perfect Shock"; "Rebel West; Saturday's Child"; "Shipskirt"; "A Tale For Poor Losers"; and "A Tale For the End of Summer".

Additional materials related to items in this subseries may be found in Series III: Correspondence - - Derivative works; Series III: Correspondence - - Financial and legal; Series III: Correspondence - - Professional activities; Series V: Financial and legal papers; Series VII: Clippings; Series IX: Serials; Series XI: Maps.
