Branch Spotlight: Northwest Branch

Northwest Regional LibraryNorthwest Branch Library is one of the community jewels located in the northwest area of Pompano Beach, a residential area of families of Hispanic and Caribbean descent and retirees. Library visitors enjoy recreational and professional resources as well as dynamic historic programming with the annual Blues and Sweet Potato Pie Festival (which commemorates Juneteenth). The Blues and Sweet Potato Pie Festival is a nationwide celebration which commemorates the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation by U.S. General Gordon Granger to the last group of slaves that was liberated in Texas in 1865. The Festival has been active at Northwest Branch for at least 15 years. Activities at a typical Blues and Sweet Potato Pie Festival include Civil War re-enactors, professional story tellers, historical exhibits, toddler trains, face painting, adult and youth summer reading program kick-offs, blues music and delicious BBQ food.

Northwest Regional LibraryThe branch collection contains a large selection of material for youth. Programs such as After School @ Your Library, school supplies giveaways, chess club and Wii gaming also reflect the active participation of children and teens. Story Times services are available for all children, including those with physical/mental challenges. A large selection of best sellers and new fiction remains a popular genre with retirees. Adult programs supporting career-seekers include English Café, Get the Right Job with a Great Resume and the Computer Coaching Club. There is a proportionally large African-American and African Diaspora collection, as well as a collection of materials in Spanish.

Northwest Regional LibraryThe branch is adjacent to the City of Pompano Beach’s Apollo Park and a Boy’s and Girl’s Club, and serves numerous day care centers, five elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. The library had its beginnings in a city trailer in 1976; it joined Broward County Libraries in 1991 and was remodeled and expanded at its present location in 2005.
