Visit Main Library and check out the new OverDrive Media Station, a freestanding kiosk located on the second floor that allows you to explore BCL’s digital collection while at the library and become familiar with downloading free eBooks from the library. Browse the digital collection, sample titles and send those titles to any device for checkout via text message (SMS), email or QR code. At the Media Console, you can browse the top 100 most popular library titles, titles recently added to BCL’s collection, titles for children and teens, and collections of titles by subject or language. A new, updated Overdrive app for Android, iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch) and Windows 8 is now available to Broward County Library customers, with features that make it even simpler to access and download the 1,000s of great titles.
The new version eliminates the Adobe Authorization step from the app installation process—one of library customers’ most frequently requested enhancements!
First-time users will now be prompted to create an OverDrive account. There is no change for existing users, even when they update OverDrive’s newest version. Customers under 13 can anonymously authorize the OverDrive app without creating an account. Another new feature is the ability to return Open EPUB titles before the end of their lending period; all formats that the app supports can now be returned before expiration.

BCL WoW app on a mobile phoneVirtual Library Cards

Broward County Library cards have gone virtual! Broward County Library’s BCL WoW mobile app is used by thousands of library customers to quickly and easily search for materials, place holds and locate the closest Broward County Library as well as find free library events and classes. Now, customers can also use the app as a virtual library card – no more lost library cards! The new feature allows customers to use the app to check out materials using their smart phone or tablet. Simply open the app, click on “My Account” and enter a library card number, last name on the account and PIN (last four digits of the phone number connected to the account). Once credentials have been entered, My Account will show an option called “Library Card: Show card for scanning.” Tap the option to reveal the library card bar code for your library card, which will be displayed vertically. The app also provides a checkbox at the bottom of that screen to save this information. Customers then can simply show the virtual library card to the librarian at the circulation desk to check out items.

The Creation Station at Main Library was one of four United States libraries recognized in a press release on announcing the first ever White House Maker Faire. The press release notes efforts nationwide by both the private and public sector to promote vital skills in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and lead a grassroots renaissance in American manufacturing, including BCL’s own Creation Station.

New eReading Room for Youth
Children and teens now have their own eReading “room.” The main digital eBook collection now has a separate site to provide a safe and easy browsing for both children and teens and young adults. This appealing and user-friendly page contains eBooks and audiobooks, and browsing can be done by subject, reading level or interest level. Visitors to the Kids or Teen eReading Rooms can also browse through new eBook and audiobooks or check out the latest Sunshine State Readers.
