Broward County Library’s Visual Catalog Upgraded
Checked out the new enhanced Visual Catalog yet? Several new and enhanced features make placing holds, renewing, and searching for items easier than ever before! The Visual Catalog’s new look includes an eye-catching, updated main Search page that automatically scales to fit any size monitor or tablet as well as larger, higher-contrasted fonts for easy readability. More space is now allocated to the “Results” list, making it easier to view catalog selections. The “My Account” area is improved, with bright cover art displays for Loans, Holds and Lists that are now sortable. The Visual Catalog also features a new easy-to-follow “Days Left” message instead of just a due date when viewing the list of items currently checked out. Enhancements to the “Search” features include on-screen hints for borrowers, the ability to sort lists by title, author and publication date and other features such as saved “Lists” and “Saved Search” display improvements.
Weekly WoW (Without Walls)
In 2014, Broward County Library will soon celebrate its 40th anniversary. As we lead up to this milestone, the library website will feature one free and fantastic library service each week that will WoW you. Spread the word about these and other valuable services your Broward County Library provides and help us celebrate the past while we look forward to the future. The Weekly WoW has already featured Broward County Library’s free eReaders for loan, the "LVP" (Library Volunteer Person) volunteer program and free Wi-Fi access at all library locations. Broward County Libraries now offers more than 300 digital magazines for free via Zinio Digital Magazine Newsstand. This exciting new service allows readers to view popular magazines or download them to any computer or mobile device. Enjoy the latest issue of a favorite magazine and even subscribe to them to get magazines monthly. Magazines are not checked out and there are no subscription limits so there is never a need to place a hold or wait to read any magazines. Read the magazines you want, when you want. See the exact features, photos and even ads as well as online extras such as audio, video and live links.
From ESPN to Oprah, Zinio offers a wide range of magazine genres including entertainment, home and garden, sports, lifestyle, fashion and more. Save money by never having to purchase favorite magazines, and because they are digital, there are no worries about damaging the magazine in any way or concerns about storing your favorite back issues. To get started using Zinio, you’ll need a library card and an email account. After registering for Zinio, you can find all your favorite magazines – and try new ones you might not otherwise purchase.
OverDrive Upgrades to “Next Generation”
OverDrive has improved and upgraded its digital platform to offer library customers faster and easier one-step checkout for eBooks as well as adding other features that make the eBook experience even better. The new “Next Generation” Digital Library Platform features a responsive design which allows the mobile and desktop experience to be the same, as it is automatically optimized for any size screen regardless of a user’s device. Additionally, the upgrades OverDrive Read (browser-based eBooks) and search and navigation improvements and streaming audio and video technology.
Macmillan Books Added to eBook Collection
Broward Library customers now have free access to more than 1,150 mystery and crime eBooks from Macmillan. Select eBooks such as thrillers, cozy mysteries, psychological suspense and hard-boiled crime including Pray for Silence by Linda Castillo, In the Bleak Midwinter by award-winning author Julia Spencer-Fleming and The Tourist by Olen Steinhauer. There are also titles from authors Chris Ewan, Ian Rankin, Lee Child, Charles Todd and more. Check them out today!
How Much Do You Save with Broward County Library?
Broward County Library customers can now find out how much money is saved by getting books, movies, music and more from your library instead of buying them. Beginning March 1, Broward County Library will provide customers with a “Return on Investment” (ROI) feature on their check-out receipt that displays the cost of the items being checked out. Now customers can see for themselves what a great value it is to borrow materials from the library instead of purchasing them.

Broward County Library Honored by League of Women Voters of Broward County
The League of Women Voters of Broward County presented Broward County Libraries Division with their League of Women Voters of Broward County Good Government Award for 2013. The Libraries Division was cited for its support of the 2012 election cycle by hosting 32 “Informed Voter” workshops across Broward County. Libraries distributed QR code cards that allowed patrons to verify their voter registration status by means of their smart phones and coordinated the distribution of 70,000 copies (50,000 in English and 20,000 in Spanish) of the nonpartisan 2012 Florida Elections and Voter Guide.
Learn How to Download Music, Magazines and eBooks at Free Classes from Broward County Library
Learn about digital downloads and accessing great free eMaterials from a free class from your library. Beginning in June, participating Broward Library locations will host free workshops and classes in digitally downloading free hit music, bestselling eBooks, movies and magazines. Bring your own device or visit a technology “petting zoo” for hands-on experience on one of the library’s eReaders. Topics include downloading magazines with Zinio Digital Newstand, which offers hundreds of free titles for downloading; iPad for beginners; downloading free music (five songs weekly!); and introduction to eReaders. The classes are free and open to the public.
Broward County Libraries Partners to Provide Children with Free Lunches During Summer
Eight Broward County Libraries Division locations, in conjunction with Sisters for Abundant Living, provide free lunch and afternoon snacks for children ages 18 and under during June, July and August. The meals, which are made possible by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Summer BreakSpot program, meet nutritional United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines. All lunches and snacks will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.
New Associate Director for Public Services Named
Laura Connors has been named the associate director for public services for Broward County Libraries Division. She has worked for Broward County Libraries for over 22 years, most recently as the assistant regional library manager for Northwest Regional Library and Southwest Regional Library.
“We are very excited to welcome Laura Connors as our new associate director for public services,” says Broward County Libraries Division Director Skye Patrick. “Her broad range of experience with Broward County Libraries at all levels of management, commitment to innovation and excellent customer service make her the ideal person for this position.”
Free Downloadable Music Videos from Freegal
Broward County Library now has music videos you can download at no-cost from Freegal, which offers 12,000 music videos in MP4 format that you can download and keep forever. Freegal users get five free music downloads a week, and video download counts as two of the weekly allotments. New content will be added weekly. The videos are large files and it’s recommended that users be connected to a Wi-Fi or cable while downloading.
Connections Newsletter is Now Fit and Trim
Connections, Broward County Library’s bi-monthly newsletter, has undergone a makeover! The print publication, which features BCL events, customer spotlights and more, was redesigned to trim two inches from the newsletter’s unfolded width. This slimmer publication can be printed much cheaper, allowing us to increase the number of copies available but maintain the same price. The new design is also more “pocket friendly” while providing plenty of room to highlight Broward County Library’s special events. The printing of Connections is funded by the Broward Public Library Foundation.
New Service Brings Free IndieFlix Streaming Videos to Library Customers
Broward County Library customers now have thousands of independent movies from around the world streamed are instantly over the Internet – for free via IndieFlix. Access shorts, documentaries and feature films from worldwide film festivals. Watch on your Xbox, PC, Mac, Smartphone, Tablet and even Roku. Requires Internet Explorer 10 or above Chrome, Firefox or Safari internet browser for optimal results. IndieFlix uses the same log-in as Zinio Magazines, so if you already have an RBGateway account, you are ready to watch streaming videos.

This new streamlined page is a new online resource hub that makes it easier than ever for customers to find the everyday and academic research tools they need. Simply choose from a handful of friendly categories and you are on your way to helpful information. Whether you need to look up a phone number, need help writing a résumé, or want to read an archived magazine or newspaper article, it’s all here in one place. No matter what device you use: computer, tablet, or smart phone, the new Online Resources page will seamlessly connect you with the sources you seek.
