FLORIDA CENTER FOR THE BOOK, located at the Broward County Main Library, was established in 1984 as the first affiliate of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. Florida Center for the Book brings enriching experiences to readers throughout Florida, by:

  • Celebrating the literary heritage of Florida
  • Bringing readers and writers together
  • Promoting books, reading, and libraries

Programs

Letters About Literature Writing Contest
This national contest invites students in grades 4-12 to write to an author and explain how the author’s book changed the student’s life. State winners receive cash awards and gift certificates and are entered in the national competition for an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.

Evenings with the Author
Authors of national renown discuss their work with readers in a casual setting.

Florida Literary Landmarks
Friends of Libraries U.S.A. (FOLUSA) has designated seventeen important literary sites in the state of Florida, many of which are sponsored by Florida Center for the Book.

Writers Workshops
Writers workshops are conducted by nationally-recognized and award-winning writers. Prices vary.

Free Traveling Exhibits

  • Hemingway in Florida and Cuba
    This 16-panel framed exhibit features photographs of Hemingway's life from 1929 to 1960 and is illustrated with text highlighting key events during this time. 
     
  • Tennessee Williams Retrospective
    This 16-panel exhibit highlights the life and work of Tennessee Williams through text and 90 photographs.
