Friends of the Northwest Branch Library

The Friends of the Northwest Branch Library was established in 2005 when a few dedicated community members that supported the library faithfully began to meet and plan activities at their community library branch. Their biggest promotion to date has been their Juneteenth Celebration: Blues and Sweet Potato Pie Festival held annually in June at Apollo Park, adjacent to the library. The event attracts more than 400 family participants every year.

The Friends have also partnered with Broward Sheriff’s Department and neighborhood homeowners groups and community volunteers to present the Community Back to School Fun Day & Backpack Give Away. On August 9, 2014 over 1000 backpacks were given out to youth.

The Friends regularly donate their time and sponsor holiday season activities. They frequent the service area schools and read stories to the elementary school children. They have sponsored programs for community senior citizens such as “Having their Say” which has attracted more than 50 senior participants and has been very popular to the community thanks to the Friends.

The Friends of the Northwest Branch Library also sponsor the English Café, a program designed to help newcomers to the United States and people who wish to improve their English. Because of their sponsorship and time, Northwest Branch has been able to increase its Literacy participation by 25%. It has been an opportunity for newcomers and their families to be introduced to the library and has allowed the newcomers to practice speaking English.

Northwest Friends also provide refreshments for the library’s themed Historical programs and the Adult Summer Reading Program.

The Friends of the Northwest Branch Library support and are a part of the umbrella group, Friends of the Broward County Libraries. They advocate for libraries and help to bring in new customers regularly.

The Friends of the Northwest Branch have been an asset to the Northwest Branch as well as the Broward County Libraries Division. They continue to keep the library a central part of the community.
