Reading is HOT this Summer!
 Whether you’re 3 or 103, summertime is fun time at Broward County Library, as the 2012 Summer Reading Program (SRP) kicks off with a host of exciting programs and events. Visit your library and sign up for the Summer Reading Program sponsored by the Miami Dolphins Foundation. The more you read, the more chances you’ll have to win prizes!
Summer reading is crucial when it comes to maintaining children’s reading skills, with studies showing that reading over the summer prevents “summer reading loss.” Children can lose up to three months of reading progress and they don’t catch up in the fall. The Summer Reading Program keeps children motivated and reading. For the grown-ups, the SRP is the perfect time to relax and read for the fun of it.

Broward County Library Publishes First eBook (Back to Top)
 Broward County Library has published its first eBook, The Bienes Museum Catalogs of James A. Findlay. This beautiful publication honors the work of librarian and curator James A. Findlay, who served as director of the Bienes Museum of the Modern Book, a rare books and special collections library located at Main Library. Findlay, who passed away in 2010, was responsible for organizing and curating exhibitions from the special collections which totaled more than 15,000 items, including rare books, artifacts, manuscripts and reference materials.
The new eBook, the first of its kind to be created in-house at Broward County Library, is a survey of the approximately 30 printed publications Findlay and his staff prepared to accompany Bienes Museum exhibitions. The Bienes Museum Catalogs of James A. Findlay provides an exciting look back at publications that Jim Findlay (1943-2010) wrote, edited or contributed in some capacity. Jim and his colleagues produced an array of exceptional print pieces, at times in collaboration with expert collectors.
The Bienes Museum Catalogs of James A. Findlay may be accessed for free by visiting Broward County Library’s online Digital Collections page. It is available in EPUB eBook (iPad, NOOK, Sony Reader) Kindle Book. You can also view the EPUB eBooks on your computer with Adobe Digital Editions.

When Paul Friedberg moved to South Florida in 1999, his daily drive took him past the Century Plaza/Leon Slatin Branch Library. Although he lives in Boca Raton, Paul Friedberg makes Century Plaza Branch his home library and willingly pays the $50 non-resident fee to enjoy Broward County Library’s services. “The people at Century Plaza are very friendly and accommodating,” he explains. “I read so many books that it would cost a fortune to pay for them. Broward County Library gets the new books so quickly – I never have to wait for bestsellers.” Paul is also a fan of the new BCL WoW mobile app.
“It changes the way you use the library. My phone is always with me. I hear about a book I want and I get my phone and order it from the library,” he explains. “It couldn’t be more perfect. It does everything but go to the library and pick up the book for me!”

 Inspired by Mother’s Day, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd pushed for a special day for dads. Raised by her single father, Dodd worked with her pastor to write the original Father’s Day resolution.
The first Father’s Day was held in Spokane, Washington in 1910. Today, there are nearly 66.3 million dads in the U.S. who will receive nearly 95 million Father’s Day cards this year, accompanied by 95 million neckties!

Anancy Festival at the Library! (Back to Top)
The Anancy Festival 2012, a celebration of Caribbean-American culture and history is coming to South Regional/Broward College Library on Saturday, June 9 from noon to 5 p.m. Named for Anansi, the West African trickster of folklore, the Anancy Festival will feature music, stories and dance and will be presented in four cities: Pembroke Pines, Orlando, Washington, D.C. and Kingston, Jamaica. The event will be simulcast between each city so attendees can view performances at different locations. Geared toward children and teens, the festival is free and open to the public.

Celebrate Juneteenth at the Blues and Sweet Potato Pie Festival! (Back to Top)
 Northwest Branch Library will host their annual Blues and Sweet Potato Pie Festival starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 16. The festival is held each summer in honor of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
The festival features live music, lots of fun kids’ activities and, of course, delicious sweet potato pie! It also kicks off the Summer Reading Program at Northwest Branch Library, and children, teens and adults are invited to sign up to read and win great prizes.

Stonewall: The History of the Gay Liberation Movement, an exhibit commemorating the 1969 Stonewall Riots, will be on display at North Regional/Broward College Library throughout June and July. Stonewall explores how and why three hot nights in New York City in June 1969 became a turning point in the struggle for gay, lesbian and human rights. The Stonewall Riots blazed a path for gay rights and gay pride, marking a turning point in the struggle for equality for all. Learn about this powerful chapter in U.S. history and how it became the defining event in the start of the gay rights movement. Exhibit on loan from the Stonewall Museum Archive.
