Public Laws, Statutes, and Code

Public and Private Laws (Slip Laws And United States Statutes at Large) - website
Newly enacted federal laws are first published as slip laws, in unbound pamphlet format. Slip laws are issued in chronological order by public law number. At the end of each Congressional session, slip laws are bound, in chronological order, into volumes entitled Statutes at Large. These volumes contain both public and private laws.

United States Code - website; search the U.S. Code 
The general and permanent laws of the Statutes at Large are codified in the United States Code. Codification provides an arrangement of laws in a systematic order. It is divided into 50 broad subject areas, known as titles. 

United States Code Annotated
The United States Code Annotated includes the text of the United States plus references to judicial decisions and other related legal sources. The annotated edition is updated with annual supplements

Finding Aids for Enacted Legislation

Shepard’s Acts and Cases by Popular Name
These volumes provide a compilation of popular names by which federal and state acts and cases have been referred to or cited.

United States Code Congressional and Administrative News
In addition to providing the text of public laws, this publication also provides excerpts of the more important reports and hearings associated with each public law.

Legislative Histories

Congressional Record - website
The proceedings of the House and Senate are printed daily in the Congressional Record. The Reference Section has a complete file of the Congressional Record and its predecessors from 1789 to the present.

United States Code Congressional and Administrative News  
In addition to providing the text of public laws, this publication also provides excerpts of the more important reports and hearings associated with each public law.

Each year, the President’s Executive Orders and Proclamations are published in Title 3 of the Code of Federal Regulations.

U.S. Code Congressional and Administrative News
This weekly publication includes Executive Orders and Proclamations, in addition to legislative information.

ADMINISTRATIVE LAW - REGULATORY LAW (Rules/Regulations)

Federal Register - website
This daily publication lists the full text of the rules and proposed rules of each Federal administrative agency.

Code of Federal Regulations - website
This annual series of volumes provides the codification of the general and permanent rules and regulations originally published in the Federal Register. The Code of Federal Regulations is arranged in 50 broad subject areas, known as titles.

List of Sections Affected 
This publication updates the Code of Federal Regulations. The user is referred to Federal Register citations for changes in particular rules and regulations.

CIS Index to the Code of Federal Regulations
This commercially-produced index is more comprehensive than the index that accompanies the Code of Federal Regulations.

ADMINISTRATIVE LAW - REGULATORY LAW (Decisions)
The Reference Section has print or microfiche copies of decisions of several agencies including the following: Comptroller General of the U.S., Federal Communications Commission, Federal Labor Relations Authority, Federal Maritime Commission, Federal Trade Commission, Interstate Commerce Commission, National Labor Relations Board, National Transportation Safety Board, U.S. Department of the Interior, and U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board. 

The decisions of these agencies and many others may be found on the websites of the agencies.

Federal Supplement
Selected opinions from federal district courts are included in the Federal Supplement.

U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeal Opinions - website

Federal Reporter
The Federal Reporter contains the written opinions of the federal appellate courts (U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeal) from 1880 to the present. Also included are some opinions of the federal district courts from 1880 to 1931.

U.S. Supreme Court Opinions - website

Slip Opinions
U.S. Supreme Court opinions are first officially published in unbound pamphlet format as slip opinions.

Preliminary Prints
Slip Opinions are periodically grouped together in chronological order in small paperbound volumes called Advance Sheets.  These serve as the report until the hardcover version is published.

United States Reports
This is the official hardbound compilation of the United States Supreme Court opinions. Generally, 4-5 volumes are published each year.

Landmark Briefs and Arguments of the Supreme Court of the United States: Constitutional Law
This multi-volume set includes the arguments and briefs of the major U.S. Supreme Court cases.

Shepard’s Acts and Cases by Popular Name (Reference Desk)
This is a compilation of popular names by which federal and state cases have been referred to or cited. Citations are provided.

Shepard’s United States Supreme Court Case Names Citator
This compilation of case names and citations of U.S. Supreme Court cases covers 1900 to the present.

Shepard’s Federal Case Names Citator:  11th Circuit Cases
This compilation of case names and citations of 11th Circuit cases covers 1940 to the present.

Federal Practice Digest
This series of volumes is a finding tool for federal case law at the district, appellate, and Supreme Court levels.

U.S. Supreme Court Digest
This digest is a finding tool for U.S. Supreme Court cases.

Citation Books (for “Shepardizing”)

Shepard’s United States Citations
A “citation” is a reference in a later (citing) case to an earlier (cited) case. This is a compilation of citations to United States Supreme Court cases.

Shepard’s Federal Citations
This is a compilation of citations to cases reported in the Federal Reporter and the Federal Supplement.

This is a compilation of rules governing criminal procedure in federal courts.

Federal Rules of Civil Procedure - website
This is a compilation of rules governing civil procedure in federal courts.

Florida Rules of Court – Federal
This is a compilation of court rules governing federal practice in Florida. It includes Rules of Evidence, Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure, Rules of the U.S. District Courts of Florida, and Rules of the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts for Florida.
