The Fun Rolls on with 2013 Summer Reading Program
As the height of summer hits us (complete with hair-raising humidity and daily downpours), it’s time to take refuge from the heat and seek indoor summer fun.
Broward County Libraries Summer Reading Program, which runs until August 8, offers good times and great reads for all ages. The Summer Reading Program offers special events and shows while offering children incentives and rewards to read.
Upcoming Highlighted Summer Reading Program Finale Events for Kids and Teens
- African-American Research Library and Cultural Center
August 3 – “It’s a Family Affair!” End-of-summer finale with games, crafts, S.T.E.M. Academy exhibits, prizes and barbeque for the whole family, all ages, outdoor event, 12 noon to 2 p.m. Please call 954-357-6209 for free ticket. Space is limited.

Summer finale fun isn’t just for kids. Here’s what’s happening for grown-ups:
Summer Means Free Food and Fun at BCL!
From now through August 16, participating Broward County Libraries Division locations, in conjunction with Sisters for Abundant Living, will provide free lunch and afternoon snacks for children ages 18 and under. The meals, which are made possible by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Summer BreakSpot program, meet nutritional United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines. All lunches and snacks will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Read Aloud This Summer and All Year Long: Florida Center for the Book Partners with Read Aloud 15 MINUTES Campaign
Join Read Aloud 15 MINUTES, a drive to encourage parents to spend 15 minutes each day reading aloud to their child. Sponsored by the American Library Association, the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, Reach Out & Read and United Way, Read Aloud 15 MINUTES raises awareness of the importance of reading aloud. Read Aloud 15 MINUTES touts the extensive benefits of reading aloud to children including:
- Encourages brain development in children during critical years of birth to three.
- Increases child’s vocabulary and introduces new words and concepts.
- Fosters a love of reading and creates bonding time between parents and children
- Invaluable for building literacy skills that are vital to an individual’s success.
