In August, Jamaica (Aug. 6) and Trinidad and Tobago (Aug. 31) will respectively celebrate 50 years of independence from Great Britain, and the Caribbean will be rocking with festivals and fun. For Jamaicans, that includes a gala parade in downtown Kingston, local street parties and flag-raising ceremonies. Meanwhile, those in the nation of Trinidad and Tobago will celebrate with military-style parades, music and a fireworks finale.

The Special Collections of the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) houses a number of collections that feature art, ephemera and more from Jamaica and the Caribbean. The Frederic Gomes Cassidy Collection features books on the history and culture of the Caribbean islands with a strong emphasis on Jamaica. The Library of the Spoken Word provides 300 recordings of lectures, oral histories, stories and documentaries of Caribbean culture and history produced by the University of the West Indies. Additionally, AARLCC’s Special Collection also features an extensive selection of periodicals, newspapers and microfilm with Caribbean publications such as Caribbean Quarterly.
