National Sewing Month Brings the Art of Textile Crafts to Broward County Library

Male Stylist Altering DressWith the rise in popularity of fashion-themed reality shows such as Project Runway, which offer a peek into the inner workings of clothing design, more and more people are trying their hand at home sewing. By learning to recreate pricey styles for just pennies on the dollar – in the fabric and size that’s right for you – savvy stitchers are saving big money while making their own personal style statement. According to Project Runway sponsor and sewing machine manufacturer Brother International, 2010 was a record year for sewing, with U.S. sales of machines and accessories up 22% over 2009.

Whether you’re a seasoned sewing pro or first-timer, visit Broward County Libraries in September to celebrate National Sewing Month and learn more about sewing and other crafts such as applique and embroidery. National Sewing Month was launched in 1982, when the American Home Sewing & Craft Association requested that President Ronald Reagan declare September National Sewing Month “in recognition of the importance of home sewing to our nation.”

The theme for National Sewing Month 2012 is “Sew for the Fun of It,” and Broward County Library is offering three National Sewing Month programs to encourage just that:

September 5 - National Sewing Month with the American Sewing Guild - Zippers! 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Northwest Regional Library, 3151 University Dr., Coral Springs, FL 33065 (954-341-3900)

September 14 - National Sewing Month with the American Sewing Guild - Hand Sewing Techniques, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., North Regional/Broward College Library, 1100 Coconut Creek Blvd., Coconut Creek, FL 33066 (954-201-2600)

September 29 - National Sewing Month with the American Sewing Guild, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., South Regional/Broward College Library, 7300 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines, FL (954-201-8825)
