10 Great Ways to Celebrate the Season with Broward County Library!

  1. Give yourself the gift of music with free downloadable songs, LPs and music videos from l. Use your Broward County Library card to access over 9 million songs from over 28,000 labels. You can download up to six songs per week and they never expire.

  2. Treat yourself to a fun, free holiday event at Broward County Library. Watch a dance performance or play, enjoy a seasonal concert, watch a winter film or drop in on one of our free holiday parties. Check our holiday happenings for a full list of activities for all ages.

  3. Don’t just give a present – be present! Center yourself at free meditation and yoga classes held at library locations countywide. You can also use your Broward County Library card to enroll in free online courses in subjects such as aromatherapy, healing affirmations, reiki, meditation, the art of breathing and beginner’s yoga.

  4. bc wow appLove magazines, hate the cost of subscriptions? Stuff your stocking with free, downloadable magazines available online from Broward County Library! All you need to get started is your Broward County Library card. Use it to access magazines that cover everything from arts and crafts to rock and roll, with every subject in between and in five languages (English, Spanish, Chinese, German and Portuguese).

  5. Make it an “appy” holiday this year by downloading the library’s mobile app, BCLWoW (Broward County Library Without Walls). It allows you to access your library account, search the catalog, place holds, find your nearest library and more. It can also be used as a virtual library card to check out items at any Broward County Library location.

  6. Take charge of your future and get ready for a successful new year with free job, career and business resources available both online and in person at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center’s Small Business Resource Center or Main Library’s Creation Station Business.

  7. library volunteerIt’s always better to give than receive. Give the gift of your time by becoming a Broward County Library volunteer. The opportunities to make a difference are numerous and the rewards are countless. Become a library ambassador, a programs assistant, a computer class instructor, adult tutor or fill one of many other volunteer positions.

  8. Give the little ones a story time treat with Dial-A-Story. Just call 954-357-7777 to hear one of the week’s four featured stories which include contemporary tales, timeless classics and favorite fairy and folk tales. Professionally recorded and available 24/7, Dial-A-Story, which is geared toward younger children, is easy to access and loads of fun. Many libraries also offer story times for kids; check our online event calendar for details.

  9. Have a free day during the holidays? Make time for a visit to the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, located in the historic Sistrunk Boulevard neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale. This 60,000 square-foot facility includes an auditorium, exhibit area, computer labs and a gallery. Along with its typical branch library collection, other collections include books and electronic materials related to African-American and Caribbean history, culture and experiences, primary source materials, and special collections from notable donors. Visit now to see the traveling exhibit, Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863, and the March on Washington, 1963, which examines the Civil Rights Movement.

  10. Make a New Year’s resolution that will cost nothing but give so much. If you don’t have one yet, now is the time to get your free Broward County Library card. It’ll quickly become the most valuable card in your wallet – what else provides access to free books, eBooks, movies, music, magazines, language-learning resources, online classes and more?


Career Online High School 2016 Inaugural Commencement Ceremony to Take Place on Thursday, December 15th at North Regional/Broward College Library

graduatesBroward County Library's Career Online High School will hold its inaugural commencement ceremony at 10AM on Thursday, Thursday, December 15, 2016, at North Regional/Broward College Library in Coconut Creek. The event is free and open to the public.

Special guests include keynote speaker and Broward County Board of County Commissioner-District 9 Dale V. C. Holness; Broward County Libraries Division Acting Director Laura Connors; Smart Horizons Career Online Education Director of Academics and Principal of Schools Teresa M.Salafrio and Smart Horizons Career Online Education Co-Founder and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Howard Liebman; and State Library of Florida Division of Library and Information Services Director Amy Johnson. Career Online High School graduate Judith Johns will give the student address.

The ceremony is being held for the 21 students who have successfully completed Broward County Library's Career Online High School (COHS), a free program that offers adults the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and a career certificate online. The library provides a limited number of scholarships to qualified students who are looking to advance their careers and prepare for workforce entry or continue their education.

They will also close at 6PM on Saturday, December 31st and remain closed for Sunday, January 1 and Monday, January 2, 2016, in observance of the New Year’s holiday.

Save the Date – The Next Destination Fridays is February 3, 2017 !destination fridays logo

The first Destination Fridays of 2017 is to New York City to celebrate the Harlem Renaissance.
This after-hours, over-21 event is scheduled for 6:30 to 9:30PM on February 3 at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center.

Get Into the Fast Lane @Broward County Libraries

Fast Lane two checkered flagsBroward County Library customers can now use Fast Lane, a quick, easy way to check out items from Broward County Library. Instead of waiting in line to pick up holds and get materials checked out, books, DVDs and CDs can be picked up at new customer-holds shelves and then taken to any of the new Fast Lane checkout stations.

Fast Lane is part of Broward County Library's new Service Model, launched earlier this year, that provides the community with longer service hours and more open days at library locations without any increase to the library's budget. Fast Lane also allow library staff to provide more one-on-one assistance in addition to making more materials and resources readily available to customers.

"Broward County Library is constantly seeking new ways to provide a better customer experience and Fast Lane is the latest," says Broward County Libraries Division Acting Director Laura Connors.

Make Fast Lane even easier by downloading the BCL WoW App on your phone and tablet and using it as a virtual library card! Just sign in to your account in the "My Account" section and click on "Library Card". Then scan your virtual library card at the Fast Lane station to check out your items.
