Vojtěch Kubašta artworkMaker’s Month & Pop-up Fun at The Amazing Vojtěch Kubašta: A Showcase of His Pop-up and Illustrated Children’s Books

The works of Vojtěch Kubašta, illustrator, author and paper engineer, will be featured during The Amazing Vojtěch Kubašta: A Showcase of His Pop-up and Illustrated Children’s Books exhibit, on display from July 18, 2014 to January 16, 2015 at the Bienes Museum of the Modern Book, located at the Broward County Main Library. A series of free events will be held at the Museum conjunction with the exhibit:

  • September 18, 3 to 4 p.m. The Wonderful World of Pop-up Books: Celebrating Vojtěch Kubašta and Other Outstanding Paper Engineers of Children’s Books: Dr. Janet Towell, professor of reading education at Florida Atlantic University, focuses on the history of pop-up books in children’s literature.
  • September 20, 1 to 3 p.m. Pop-up Book Workshop for Families: Artist Adrienne Chadwick from NSU Museum of Modern Art Fort Lauderdale demonstrates simple paper-sculpture techniques that can be used to build a pop-up of your own! The Courage to Remember • Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Barbed wireOn Thursday, October 30, 2014 at 11 a.m. a ribbon-cutting ceremony for The Courage to Remember a historical exhibit of the Holocaust (1933-1945) will be held at the gallery six at Main Library. The exhibit is presented by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF) - The French National Railway Corporation, and the Foundation for California; co-sponsored by Broward County Libraries and the Office of Broward County Commissioner Dale V.C. Holness.


 
Author Carl Hiaasen to Speak at Library Foundation Fundraiser

Best-selling author Carl HiaasenOn October 29, best-selling author Carl Hiaasen brings his special brand of satirical wit to a fundraising event for the Broward Public Library Foundation, which supports Broward County Library programs. The event, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., includes a cocktail reception, book sales, signings and a talk by Hiaasen on his latest book, Skink – No Surrender. Tickets for the event, to be held at NSU’s Museum of Art, One E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, are $75. For tickets, call 954-357-7382 or visit www.bplfoundation.org.


 
Free SAT/ACT Prep! @ your library

PencilFree workshops for college-bound students will begin at Main Library in November, with required pre-registration beginning October 8. All workshops are 12 to 3 p.m. The SAT/ACT program series are offered to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. The workshops, which are sponsored by the Broward Public Library Foundation, will target the official SAT on December 6 and the official ACT on December 13.
