    June is LGBT History Month at Broward County Libraries

    couple holding handsHonor and celebrate LGBT History Month with a free concert at Main Library featuring songs by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender composers. The event will take place on June 24th from 2 to 3PM on the library’s first floor.

    To learn more about LGBT history, visit the Stonewall National Museum Wilton Manors Gallery, which is one of the only permanent spaces in the United States devoted to the display of exhibitions on LGBT culture and history. Their current exhibit is Game On! Female Athletes Competing with Homophobia in Sports, which will be on display until July 2nd.  For more information, call the gallery at 954-530-9337.


     

    Let’s Celebrate Caribbean-American Heritage Month!

    man playing bongosThis year marks the eighth anniversary of National Caribbean American Heritage Month. Started in 2005, it recognizes the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States. We’re hosting two great events next month to celebrate:

    Anancy Festival

    anancy festival logoOn Saturday, June 17th at 1PM, South Regional/Broward College Library will host their annual Anancy Festival. This fun, free family event features Caribbean and African cultural experiences such as drumming fingers demonstration, games, songs, arts and crafts, face painting, storytelling, refreshments and more.

    The Anancy Festival, named for Anancy the Spider, the West African trickster of folklore, is a celebration of Caribbean-American culture geared toward children and teens. The festival provides a unique way for youngsters to learn about their cultural heritage and experience a rich collection of stories, music and dance. 

    Destination Fridays Caribbean-American Heritage Celebration

    destination fridays caribbean heritage celebrationOn June 2nd from 6:30 to 9:30PM, Destination Fridays at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) will host a Caribbean-American Heritage Celebration. This event, which is open to anyone age 21 and over, will feature food from local Caribbean chefs, a signature rum cocktail, steel drums, dancing, a travel talk and gift basket raffles.

    The highlight of the evening will be a show called "The Caribbean's Got Talent," which will feature local Caribbean-American artists challenging each other for the top prize.

    Come dressed to compete in your country's colors and show us your pride! The Caribbean nation with the greatest participation will become a featured destination in the year 2018.

    Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased at the door or online through Eventbrite.

    New Veterans Connect Hotspot Program 


    Free WiFi Hotspots and Tablets to Veterans, Active Military Members and Their Dependents

    veteran on computerBroward County Libraries Division has teamed up with T-Mobile to launch the new Veterans Connect Hotspot Program, an innovative initiative that provides free WiFi hotspots to 450 local veterans, active military members and their dependents. The free hotspots provide unlimited access to T-Mobile's 4G LTE network and increase access to information and technology for their users.

    The program’s goal is to help veterans in their transition to civilian life by encouraging education, self-development and career advancement through technology. It also encourages the use of Broward County Libraries' vast resources and services by members of the military community.

    Beginning June 2nd, free hotspots will be loaned for one month to veterans, active military members and their dependents with valid military identification cards. Users then have the option to renew the loan three more times.
