Medical Examiner - Our Mission

The purpose of the Medical Examiner's Office is to bring expert and independent medical evaluation to the investigation of deaths that are of concern to public health, safety, and welfare of the community as a whole. We investigate cases of persons who die within the jurisdictional boundaries of this Office from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent good health, when not recently treated by a physician, while incarcerated or in any suspicious or unusual manner.  The Medical Examiner’s Office also approves the cremations of persons who die within Broward County or are transported to Broward County for the purpose of cremation after death in another state or country.

Representatives of the District Seventeen Medical Examiner’s Office are committed to providing professional services to the community.  Our Office consists of a Chief Medical Examiner, a Deputy Chief Medical Examiner, Associate Medical Examiners, Medicolegal Investigators, Forensic Technicians, a Chief Toxicologist, Associate Toxicologists, Photography Associates and Administrative Support Staff.
