Functions and responsibilities of the Environmental Monitoring Laboratory
The laboratory conducts and coordinates projects for the improvement of the environment of Broward County and ensures the goals and objectives of the agency. The field team tests and samples in various monitoring sites selected by the state, county and Federal government to ensure proper monitoring and assesment programs. Some of which include regulatory changes established by EPA on the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Everglades Restoration Program and other regulatory changes. The staff is readily available to provide technical support to the county and other governemnt agencies whenever requested. The Chemists perfom advanced analysis using Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer GC/MS, Nutrient Analyzer and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer ICPMS. Presently, the laboratory is pursuing certification for the identification of Fecal Coliform and Enterococci to comply with the needs of cities and municipalities as part of the NPDES Program. In the near future the laboratory will be preparing to conduct Molecular Microbial Source Tracking to identify any issues within our water ways to determine root cause.
In addition, we provide technical and contract support to other Broward County and state agencies. The laboratory has developed and uses automation and information systems to design studies, interpret data and report findings of environmental investigations.
