Winter Break Equestrian Day Camps
When school’s out, if you’re wondering how to keep the kids busy, check out Parks and Recreation’s Winter Break Equestrian Day Camp at Tradewinds Park and Stables in Coconut Creek. Camp will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays through Fridays, December 26-28 and January 2-4. Students will receive instructions in horse grooming, routine horse care and maintenance, use and care of tack and equipment, nutrition and feeding, and horse anatomy. Riding instruction is included, weather permitting. The fee is $75 per rider per day, and siblings qualify for a discounted rate of $50 per rider per day. Become a Broward B-Cycler
It’s never too late – or too early – to get in shape, especially with the New Year right around the corner. Why not purchase an annual membership in the countywide bikesharing program? With an annual Broward B-Cycle membership, you’ll have access to 275 bicycles at various B-stations throughout the County. Bikesharing offers an alternative form of public transportation, which is affordable, good for your health and environmentally friendly. Broward B-Cycle bikes are GPS equipped to track mileage, calories burned and carbon offsets. You must be 18 years or older with a valid credit card, and can register at broward.bcycle.com or use a credit card at the self-service kiosks at B-stations located throughout the County. Annual membership is $45, entitles you to use any bike in the system, and the first half-hour of your ride is free!
Bring the Sound of Music with Free Downloads
“Fa, la, la, la, la” wherever you are with free downloadable music from the Library. Choose from hundreds of holiday songs from Sony Music’s catalog and use your Broward County Library card to download five free songs per week. Whether you prefer traditional favorites or something more modern, Broward County Library has the sounds for the season.
The first day of Kwanzaa, December 26, is dedicated to the Umoja principle: unity of family, community nation and race. On Umoja Day, bring your family to the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, from noon to 8 p.m., to enjoy the festivities. Enjoy a special film screening of Africa United, a movie about three children who walk 3,000 miles from Rwanda to the Soccer World Cup in South Africa with many amazing adventures along the way. Help the Environment – Recycle Your Christmas Tree
The Parks and Recreation Division’s annual Chip-a-Tree begins December 26 and continues through January 21. Last year the Division recycled more than 9,000 Christmas trees representing more than 100 tons of material that would otherwise have gone to landfills. Please remove all decorations first – decorated trees are not accepted – and bring your tree to one of 14 participating parks, where it will be chipped free of charge and used for landscaping throughout the County park system. Light Up Your Life at the Fantasy of Lights
Take the family and visit the Holiday Fantasy of Lights at Tradewinds Park. The drive-through light extravaganza runs through Saturday, January 5, 2013. The three-mile route includes dozens of static and animated light displays and illuminated trees, including old favorites as well as brand-new displays. Enhance your experience with 3-D glasses available at the entry at a cost of $3 for three pairs.
