Young Volunteers at Markham Park
Markham Park received help from a youth group with 60 teens and another 15 Eagle Scouts on Saturday, July 18, 2009. Because a huge storm hit Friday night and knocked limbs and trees down, plus blew over the portable toilet, everyone had to scramble to get the project on track Saturday morning. The Youth Group had kids ages 13-25, and they came from all over the world. There were teens from Argentina, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Germany, Hawaii, Virginia, and North Carolina. They were not very prepared for the Everglades heat and bugs, but they hung in there.
Both groups worked very well, even in the heat with all the mosquitoes. The South Florida Youth Group placed more than 300 plants in the upland area north of where Motorola had planted this past spring during a corporate volunteer workday. They also pulled vines and removed invasive plants from the area. The Eagle Scout group brought aquatic plants and mucked through the wetland. They also placed 25 plants from the nursery in the upland buffer. Many thanks to all volunteers and staff who assisted with the project.
