The protection of wellfields is publicized in the 1986 Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act. The Federal wellhead protection program required all states including the State of Florida to develop a wellhead protection plan and it required communities to develop local plans to protect their groundwater source of drinking water from contaminants. The State Wellhead Protection Program is governed by Florida Administrative Code Chapter 62-521. Broward County's Wellfield and Environmental Services Team is governed by Article XIII of the Natural Resource Protection Code (Chapter 27).
