At the end of 2013, USA TODAY Travel and its 10Best.com Website announced their Readers' Choice Award winners in the category of 10 Best Florida Attractions, and Everglades Holiday Park snagged the #3 slot. The park, part of the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division since June 2012, came in after the top two, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and Sarasota's Ringling estate.
EHP finished ahead of Discovery Cove (Orlando), Disney's Magic Kingdom (Orlando), the St. Augustine Historic District, the seashells of Sanibel Island, the Salvador Dali Museum (St. Petersburg), Castillo de San Marcos (St. Augustine), and the beaches of Daytona Beach, making the park the only South Florida attraction to place in the top 10.
The 29-acre park is literally perched on the eastern edge of the Everglades, a vast ecosystem unique to Florida. Large-capacity covered airboats take visitors into the 'Glades to experience the distinctive flora and fauna found there, including alligators. Each airboat tour concludes with a live gator show back at the park's main complex, which is home to the popular Animal Planet TV series Gator Boys.
Other EHP attractions include rental boats, boat ramps for launching your own boat, a deli/food concession, a general store, and docks for fishing. (Professionally guided fishing trips are also available.) An RV campground will reopen once renovations have been completed.
The 10Best.com Website is a division of USA TODAY Travel that, according to the site, "provides its users with original, unbiased, and experiential travel content on top attractions, things to do, and restaurants for top destinations in the US and around the world. The core of the site's power is its team of local experts, a well-traveled and well-educated group who are not only experts in their fields (and their cities) but discriminating in their tastes. These local experts live in the city they write about so our content is more up-to-date than any guidebook around." These local experts make nominations in their respective areas, which are then voted on by readers of both the Website and USA TODAY.
