Yoga - Thursdays, 6-7 p.m. For ages 18 and up. $10/person. Classes in hatha yoga, a centuries-old practice designed to bring the mind, body, and spirit into harmony. Some of the benefits of yoga include relaxation, stress reduction, improved flexibility, and increased vitality. Participants should wear loose-fitting clothing and bring their own mats.
Guided Nature Walks - Sundays, 1-2 p.m. Free and for all ages. Explore the trails at Fern Forest with a park naturalist while learning about native South Florida habitats. Call to confirm staff availability, 954-357-5198.
Sierra Club Meetings - First Thursday of the month, 7:30-9:30 p.m. Free and for all ages.
Florida Trail Association Meetings - Second Thursday of the month, September-May, 7:30-9:30 p.m. Free and for all ages.
Nature Tots - Second Thursday of the month, 10-11 a.m. For ages 2-4 accompanied by an adult. $5/child. Kids and their parents can join a naturalist and learn about nature with themed age-appropriate activities. Preregistration is required. (No program in November and December.)
An Evening With the Stars Astronomy Program - See what planets and stars are visible in the night sky at this free, all-ages event sponsored by the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association. Call the day of this quarterly program to check on weather conditions.
Team/Family Shutterbug Photo Hunt - This Nature Photography 101 class is followed by a photo hunt. Participants will also get to decorate a nature-themed frame for the photo they choose to take home. This event costs $10/team.
Spring Into Gardening/Fall Into Foliage Native Plant Sales & Seminars - Local nurseries will sell native plants for butterfly gardening and wildlife attracting at this free and for-all-ages event.
EcoAction Days - First Saturday of the month, October-May, 9 a.m.-noon. For ages 13 and up. Volunteers clean up trash, plant native plants, and/or remove non-native invasive plants. Students can earn community service hours for graduation and college scholarships, and others can help improve and preserve the environment. Participants should dress appropriately with long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes that can get dirty. Participants should also bring gloves, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and drinking water. Extra tools such as shovels, rakes, and hand pruners are welcome. Volunteers must fill out an application before participating.
Dan Barrow Memorial Bluegrass Jam - Second Sunday of the month, October-May, 2-4 p.m., plus special twilight sessions on December 17, 2017, and January 21, 2018, 5-7 p.m. This all-ages event is a free unplugged jam session for musicians and listeners interested in bluegrass, folk, and mountain music. Bring an instrument if you like (no amplifiers, please). The popular audience-participation event, formerly called Jammin', has been led by the same group of volunteer musicians since its inception in 1985-86.
