Last year on April 20 more than a hundred volunteers arrived at Sullivan Park in Deerfield Beach to celebrate Earth Day by removing the trash and debris that had accumulated along the shoreline of Deerfield Island Park. Members of the Deerfield Beach and Boca Raton communities came out to support the park, which borders the Broward/Palm Beach county line. Volunteers on paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, small boats, and personal watercraft circled the island and collected debris that was then processed by the City of Deerfield Beach's recycling department.
This year the Second Annual Earth Day Waterway Cleanup at Deerfield Island Park will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 19. The setup is the same: Volunteers and event sponsors Dixie Divers and Island Water Sports will meet at Sullivan Park. Those who wish to participate on the water can either bring their own watercraft or rent a kayak or paddleboard from one of the sponsors. For those who prefer to remain on land, there will be opportunities to remove debris from the shoreline and assist with event logistics such as registration.
