Creature Features

Whether they fly through the air, creep across the landscape, or swim beneath the water, animals are of perennial interest in our parks and nature centers. This month there are more than half a dozen programs to feed our fascination with fauna.

Avian life is the subject of a Science Eye Saturday Safari at Everglades Holiday Park, from 9 to 11 a.m. on November 18. The program will focus on migratory birds, and participants will get to craft a bird feeder to take home with them. Call 954-357-8101 for more info or to reserve a spot (free supplies to the first 50 people to register).

Gain a greater understanding of fish, then actually go fishing, at “Be a Good Angler!” This second of three programs in the Family Fun Nature Series is at Anne Kolb Nature Center in Hollywood, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 5. You can either bring your own gear or borrow some at the park. Registration is required a week in advance, and the requested $2 donation goes to the Friends of Anne Kolb volunteer group. Call 954-357-5161 to sign up.

Anne Kolb is also the site of two programs about some creatures found in the park’s distinctive wetland habitat, which encompasses both swampy land and brackish water. The first, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 18, poses (and answers) the question What Is a Crustacean? The $2 fee includes games, crafts, and other activities related to such critters as crabs and shrimp. The following Saturday, November 25, from 10 to 11 a.m., the nature center will offer a Shells & Claws Hike, emphasizing such mangrove dwellers as snails and crabs. The fee is $3 per person. Call Anne Kolb at 954-357-5161 for more info.

Finally, learn about land-based creepy-crawlies at the first two installments of the latest Nature Lecture Series at Fern Forest Nature Center in Coconut Creek, both on Sundays from noon to 1 p.m. “Snakes” is the topic for the November 19 lecture, followed by “Spiders & Insects” on November 26. (The third lecture, on December 3, is on “Invasive & Exotic Species.”) A $5 donation to the Fern Allies volunteer group is requested for each lecture, which is followed by a question-and-answer session. For additional information, call the nature center at 954-357-5198.

Anne Kolb is accessible via Broward County Transit Routes #4 and #12, Fern Forest via Routes #31 and #42.

Music to Your Ears

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than listening to (or even playing) music in a beautiful natural setting? You can do just that on two Sundays this month. On November 12, you have two choices, both taking place from 2 to 4 p.m. at opposite ends of the County: the Dan Barrow Memorial Bluegrass Jam, at Fern Forest Nature Center (954-357-5198) in Coconut Creek, and Music at the Mangrove, at Anne Kolb Nature Center (954-357-5161) in Hollywood.

The Fern Forest event, which started in the mid-1980s under the name Jammin’, was renamed last year in honor of one of its founders. The program invites people either to bring an acoustic instrument and participate in a free jam emphasizing bluegrass but also featuring folk and mountain music, or to just enjoy the performance as a listener. Dates are the second Sunday of the month, October through May, with occasional Twilight Jammin’ sessions scheduled from time to time.

At Anne Kolb, the park continues its collaboration with the Music Club of Hollywood, which has been presenting free concerts in the Mangrove Hall for several years now. This month the series highlights Kris Nicholson, a Manhattan-born pianist now based in South Florida. Nicholson, who began playing as a child, is well versed in boogie-woogie, honky-tonk, and ragtime.

Two weeks later, on November 26, Secret Woods Nature Center (954-357-8884) in Dania Beach hosts its free Jamming in the Park program, which is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. on the fourth Sunday of the month year round. Geared to ages 16 and up, these acoustic jams also invite people to participate or listen.

Fern Forest is accessible via Broward County Transit Routes #31 and #42; Anne Kolb via Routes #4 and #12; and Secret Woods via Route #6.

Connecting Gratitude & Nature

Thanksgiving clip art.jpg

"As humans, we have been given the gift of nature
and the plethora of positive benefits it has to offer.
It is capable of improving our personal well-being,
by creating balanced individuals with a tranquil and prosocial demeanor.
Additionally, pondering the benefits that nature has to offer
creates a sense of gratitude."

Holiday Lowdown

  • All Broward County regional and neighborhood parks, nature centers, and natural areas (except Deerfield Island Park, which remains closed) will be open on Veterans Day, Friday, November 10. The regional parks’ holiday gate fee of $1.50/person (children 5 and under free) will not be in effect.
  • All parks (except, again, Deerfield Island) will also be open on both Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Thursday and Friday, November 23 and 24. The $1.50/person gate fee (children 5 and under free) will be in effect on both days.
  • And as a heads-up for December, remember that all Broward County parks (except Everglades Holiday Park) will be closed on Christmas Day - the one day we’re closed all year.

Nature at Night

Our nature parks are the place to be after dark in November, with eight evening events planned that will take you out on the trails to see nocturnal wildlife emerge. Most of these guided programs entail advance registration and fees (typically $3 to $5, although the Moonlight Paddle is $35). Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes; flashlights, drinking water, and insect repellent are also recommended.
