This year the Fifth Annual Earth Day Waterway Cleanup at Deerfield Island Park will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 21. In previous years more than a hundred volunteers have gathered to remove the trash and debris that accumulate along the shoreline of Deerfield Island. Members of the Deerfield Beach and Boca Raton communities come out to support the park, which borders the Broward/Palm Beach county line. Volunteers on paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, small boats, and personal watercraft circle the island and collect debris that is then processed by the City of Deerfield Beach's recycling department.
Volunteers and event sponsors Dixie Divers, Island Water Sports, and What's SUP will meet at Sullivan Park. Those who wish to participate on the water can either bring their own watercraft or rent a kayak or paddleboard from one of the sponsors. For those who prefer to remain on land, there will be opportunities to remove debris from the shoreline and assist with event logistics such as registration.
