The 243.3 acres of this park range from 23 acres of restored freshwater marsh accessible by a 1,000-foot boardwalk to the 102.2-acre Pine Island Ridge, an archaeological site that includes equestrian and nature trails and, at 29 feet above sea level, is the highest natural elevation in Broward County. Behind the main office assembly complex, there is a sculpture dedicated to the Seminole leader Sam Jones (Abiaka). The park is also listed on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.
Equestrian Trails: The park is known for its extensive network of horse trails, which were developed in cooperation with the South Florida Trail Riders Association. There are more than seven miles of designated trails, including some in the Pine Island Ridge Natural Area. Riders must bring in their own horses - rentals are no longer available at the park.
Oak Ridge Hall: A 3,440-square-foot multipurpose natural-wood building set within an oak hammock. Reservations and security deposit required. Capacity 180. Meeting rooms, outdoor pavilion, and catering kitchen available.
Large group gatherings of 250 or more persons require prior Park approval and issuance of a Park Permit to address such items as reserving space for the group, traffic control, trash removal/cleanup deposit, etc.
Picnic Shelters: Two large (61-90 capacity) and three medium (41-60), all with water, electricity, picnic tables, and grills. Reservations and security deposit required. There are also two tents available, one large and one medium.
Picnic Tables and Grills: Located throughout the park on a first-come, first-served basis. One or more picnic tables assigned to each grill.
Playgrounds: Three, located in picnic areas.
Campfire Ring: Available for group use only. Staff charges apply.
Nature Trails: Three trails. The Live Oak Trail is a 4,843-foot, wood-chipped trail. The Seminole Trail is a 2,100-foot, wood-chipped trail that includes an interpretive exhibit on the Seminole Indians. The Pine Island Ridge Trail includes a 4,381-foot paved path and a 1,250-foot trail with a 28-foot-high observation tower, Tree Tops Tower, at the entrance to the Live Oak Trail.
Marsh Observation Area: Boardwalks over water in 23 acres of restored freshwater marsh. Fishing is prohibited in this area.
Lake/Waterways: Fifteen acres for boating and fishing. Swimming not permitted.
Marina: Paddleboat rentals are available on Saturdays, Sundays, and most holidays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. No private boats permitted. $10 plus tax for one hour, $15 plus tax for two hours, or $25 plus tax for four hours. Payment of rental fees can be made by cash or credit card; rental deposits are cash only ($10/boat, along with a picture I.D.). Life jackets are provided and must be worn at all times.
Fishing: Permitted from shore, pier, and boats. License required for ages 16 and up. Catch-and-release encouraged.
Gopher Tortoise Preserve: Various areas throughout the park are home to burrowing tortoises.
Butterfly Garden: A nature trail that offers a peaceful walk through a garden planted with vegetation and flowers that attract many species of butterflies.
Safety Town: A program of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital featuring an early-childhood education course that is designed especially for kindergartners and first graders with the goal of reducing accidental injuries and deaths. The child-size town features working traffic signals, street signs, crosswalks, miniature houses, and small tricycles, along with a variety of interactive stations. Safety Town is open year round by appointment only during the week for public and private schools, charter schools, and children’s groups of 15 to 60 students. Baton and Dance Classes
This class is taught by Wendy Russell's Super Stars. In addition to classes, the Florida Super Stars perform regularly at halftime shows for the Miami Heat, the University of Miami Hurricanes, Disney World shows, and many local community events. A Little History:
Like many of our parks, Tree Tops sits on land once slated for development, until it was declared open space in the mid-1970s through Broward County's Land Use Plan. In this case, the land was owned by golfer Sam Snead and three partners, who had planned a golf course and high-rise apartments for the property. Instead, it was acquired by the county in February 1980, at a cost of $4.4 million - $2.3 million from the 1978 bond issue, which approved 15 park acquisition and development projects, and $2.1 million from the U.S. Department of the Interior via the Florida Department of Natural Resources' Land and Water Conservation Fund, the program's largest grant at that time. The Snead Tract, as it was then known, was renamed Tree Tops. The suggestion came from County Commissioner Anne Kolb, in reference to elevated nature trails that were planned for the park, which was developed at a cost of another $2.9 million and opened to the public on December 11, 1983. The adjacent Pine Island Ridge Natural Area opened in February 1990 and is connected to the park by a paved path that leads to an interpretive shelter.
