Public Speaking Winners

2013 Broward County High School Public Speaking Competition

Public Speaking Competitors

On May 17, 2013 the Broward County Pollution Prevention, Remediation and Air Quality Division, in partnership with the Broward County School Board and Florida Atlantic University, sponsored a public speaking competition for Broward County High School students. The theme for the competition was solar energy. Students played the role of having been appointed to the State of Florida Energy Office to research and develop solar energy in the state of Florida. The students formulated a plan, provided action steps and factual evidence to promote solar energy generation and enhance solar market conditions, and presented their results in a public speaking competition.

Thirteen students qualified to participate in the competition representing Cypress Bay High School, Coral Glades High School, Pompano Beach High School and Monarch High School. Each student was given 4 to 6 minutes to deliver their speech.

The panel of judges included Clinton A. Sockman, Vice President of Renewable Energy at Advanced Renewable Energies; Rachel Kalin, South Florida Regional Planning Council; and Tony Abbate, FAU’s Associate Provost of the Broward Campuses and professor in FAU’s School of Architecture.
