Integrated stormwater management promotes the use of green technologies and treats stormwater as a resource.
Green techniques enable us to absorb, store and treat stormwater runoff at the source, before it reaches the collection system. These techniques are designed to mimic the functions of the natural environment and may be used to help offset the impacts of urban densification, such as the increase in impervious surfaces and loss of natural areas.
Green technologies may be used anywhere that soil and vegetation can be incorporated into the urban or suburban landscape. They include bioretention, rain gardens, cisterns/rain barrels, green roofs, bioswales, stormwater wetlands, native landscaping and permeable pavements.
