School Crossing Guard Program
The Broward County Traffic Engineering Division is dedicated to the safety of students crossing busy streets walking to and from school. One vital element is the placement of School Crossing Guards along the school walk route. Currently Traffic Engineering provides Crossing Guards for (3) designated crossings located within the unincorporated area of Broward County servicing (1) elementary school. Selection of crossing locations and guard placement is made in conjunction with the School Board of Broward County.
By law all Florida School Crossing Guards in counties with a population of 75,000 or more are required to successfully complete a training program. This law, Section 234.302, Florida Statutes (F.S.), is known as the Ramon Turnquest School Crossing Guard Act.
These guidelines were developed over the course of a year by a School Crossing Guard Task Force consisting of crossing guard supervisors from some of the counties with the most highly developed crossing guard training programs as well as representatives from AAA, Traffic Engineering, Public Safety, School Board Transportation and local bicycle/pedestrian coordinators as set forth by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
