AIRport AIRwareness Forum

FLL's biodiesel hybrid electric bus

On May 11, 2005, the Community Transportation Initiative sponsored the AIRport AIRwareness Forum.

As the air travel industry continues to hold its place as the industry leader in the transportation arena, there is increased pressure on airports to explore and implement new ways to curb air pollution. The Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport (FLL) typifies airports around the country in the pursuit of different avenues that lead to enhancing air quality versus adding to the inherent environmental challenges that already face expanding airport facilities.

Learning about the experiences of other airports with bridge power managers, electric Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and associated infrastructure, biodiesel applications in trucks servicing the airline, buses serving the airport and in GSE equipment and other applications of alternative fuel is the driving force behind the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport Alternative Fuels: AIRPORT AIRWARENESS FORUM.

The Forum is a U.S. Department of Energy Advancing the Choice Event and is a collaborative effort of the Community Transportation Initiative and the Gold Coast Clean Cites Coalition in conjunction with South Florida Regional Planning Council, Broward County Environmental Protection Department, Florida Department of Transportation District IV and others.

With the ongoing expansion of most of the Florida airports, this Forum comes at a good time as airports are forced to seek ways to curb emissions and airlines are forced to seek ways to contain fuel costs.
