Air Quality Division

Monitoring Air Quality

The Air Quality Division operates and maintains a comprehensive network of air pollution monitoring stations throughout Broward County. Many of these sites have been in continuous operation since 1971, while other sites have been established over the years to keep up with the growth of the County. Each monitoring site has been specifically selected to be comparable to sites of similar geographic qualities throughout the nation and representative of many areas around Broward County. The Air Quality data gathered from these sites becomes part of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) national air quality data base.

In order to provide accurate information about the air quality in Broward County, each monitoring site has equipment designed to measure specific pollutant concentrations. Several of the monitoring locations also measure meteorological conditions, such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and wind direction. All of the pollutant data are retrieved hourly by a central computer via an automated telephone connection. The technology in use is so advanced that air quality data may be viewed at the central computer, as it is being collected.
