Green Airport Initiative Reports IssuedEnvironmental Studies

The Executive Summary and seven final environmental reports from the Green Airport Initiative (GAI) are listed below.  The GAI will help the FLL improve environmental quality and efficiency and become a community model for sustainable development.

Environmental Footprint for FLL Operations
Five environmental impact areas were evaluated including Water Quality, Solid Waste, Air Quality, Energy Consumption, and Noise.

Investigating Air Emission Impacts on the Community
This study looked at the particulate matter to determine if it was associated with aircraft operations both on and off the airport. Collected matter was analyzed chemically and using a scanning electron microscope.

Assessing the Feasibility of Utilizing Recycled Vegetable Oil as a Vehicle Fuel
This report provides details on using processed cooking oil from Airport concessions to fuel diesel vehicles at FLL. The report identifies the availability of used oil, potential vehicles, and vehicle conversion costs.

Water Reduction Opportunities and Recommendations
Two initiatives were evaluated including the upgrade of bathroom facilities and irrigation systems to reduce water/non-potable water consumption.

The analysis included a variety of renewable and conservation opportunities. It makes several recommendations including a cost benefit analysis.
