Last year, the Broward County Aviation Department issued a formal solicitation for bids to establish a Registered Traveler Program at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. A number of private companies participated in this process, which was initiated based on interest from the community in the service. In December 2008, however, the Aviation Department became aware that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has withdrawn its involvement from the Registered Traveler Program. As a result, a decision was made to suspend the bid solicitation until the long term sustainability of the program is determined.
Subsequently, staff has learned that a number of the companies offering Registered Traveler Programs at other airports have started to reduce their hours of operation and/or close during weekends. The Aviation Department will continue to monitor the evolution of the Registered Travel Program to make a determination if the solicitation should be reinitiated in the future.
