FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PARTNERS WITH AMERICAN AIRLINES IN ASSISTING PASSENGERS
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) continues to partner with American Airlines (AA) in accommodating passengers stranded due to FAA-mandated safety inspections of American Airlines MD-80 aircraft.
Airport concessionaires, airlines, and FLL have all chipped in to help stranded passengers while alternate travel plans are coordinated by AA. American Airlines has additional staff at all its ticket counters to assist passengers and to answer their questions.
AA cancelled 5 departures from FLL today out of approximately 19 daily departures. The airline expects additional departures to be cancelled Friday.
Customers who were scheduled on a flight that was cancelled may request a full refund or apply the value of their ticket toward future travel on AA. Additionally, customers scheduled to travel on any MD-80 flight from April 8-11, 2008, even if their flight has not been cancelled, may rebook without a change fee to any AA flight with availability in the same cabin as long as their travel begins by April 17.
Customers who were inconvenienced with overnight stays should go to www.aa.com where a link has been established to request information about compensation. Customers also are encouraged to continue to check AA's website or contact their travel agents for flight status information.
AA is providing accommodations (hotels, meals, and ground transportation) and will re-accommodate passengers on any of its remaining flights and on other airlines when seats are available. AA reservations can be reached at (800) 433-7300.

TEMPORARY CHANGE IN FLIGHT PATTERNS FOR NORTH RUNWAY MAINTENANCE WORK AT
FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Airfield maintenance work at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will result in a one night closure of Runway 9L-27R (North Runway) from 12:01 a.m.-5:30 a.m., Thursday, April 10, 2008. The closure will allow workers to repair the Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) at the runway approach to 9L. The EMAS is designed to minimize the hazards of an aircraft over run from the ends of the runway which is a critical component of our airfield. A small section of the EMAS is to be repaired after a cover was blown off and in turn exposed the EMAS to weather elements.
During the closure period, the airport will use Runway 13-31; and residents living in northeast Dania Beach and southwest Fort Lauderdale may notice an increase in aircraft operations over their communities.

TRAINING EXERCISE AT FORT LAUDERDALE–HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Rescue crews will hone their skills in a realistic disaster training exercise at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The drill will simulate the crash of a jetliner with fifty (50) passengers and crew on board as it makes an attempt to land at the airport. The plane will come to rest at the approach end of Runway 31 on the SE corner of US 1/Griffin Road intersection. A mock up of a damaged airliner will be built for the drill. Volunteers will be prepared in the various levels of triage to simulate injured passengers.
It is expected that more than 200 aviation professionals, fire rescue, emergency medical, and law enforcement personnel from more than 20 agencies and businesses will participate in the exercise. A portion of the ‘passengers’ will be transported for ‘medical treatment’, testing the ability of several local hospitals to respond to accidents with multiple victims.
The drill will take place on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, and will begin at approximately 09:00 a.m. and continue until approximately 11:00 a.m. (This time is to remain confidential. The responsiveness of the various agencies is one of the areas being evaluated.)
GRIFFIN ROAD CLOSURE
During the disaster drill training (9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m.), Griffin Road will be closed between US 1 and NW 10th Street. Residents who live in Melaleuca Gardens south of the airport will be able to access their neighborhood from the west only during this two-hour period. The south entrance to the airport off of Griffin Road will be closed during this time as well.
Members of the news media covering the event should report to the BCAD Administrative Office complex at 100 Aviation Boulevard no later than 8:30 a.m. There will be a media sign-in to obtain a Drill ID badge prior to proceeding to the Media Staging Area located at the BCAD Outreach Office located at 550 NW 10th Street, Dania Beach (next to the drill site entrance).
Please note: in the interest of safety, the media will be required to remain in the observer area unless escorted by the Public Information Officer.
Please advise your readers, viewers, or listeners that they may see what appears to be an aircraft accident southeast of the airport during the morning of Wednesday, March 5, 2008 is in a reality a training drill.

FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TRAFFIC UP WITH DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH FOR 5th CONSECUTIVE MONTH
November 2007 total traffic was up 8.6% as 1,864,797 passengers traveled through the facility. Domestic traffic was up 6.5%, and International traffic was up 26.7%. Contributing to the growth was JetBlue’s new service to Ponce, Buffalo, Richmond and Syracuse, Spirit’s new service to Ponce and Aruba, Frontier’s new service to Memphis, and the start up of the first half of Allegiant’s new service.
Air Carrier operations were 20,709, up 9.6% over last year. General Aviation was down 16.4% for month. Total aircraft operations were 24,801 up 4.3%.
The low-fare carriers continued their trend of positive growth. Spirit carried 283,123, more than doubling last November’s activity. AirTran was up 23.8%, and JetBlue increased by 13.9%.
Continental was the only legacy carrier to show positive growth during the period with a slight increase of 1.7% over last year. American, Delta, Northwest, and US Airways continued their trend of reduced capacity and combined for a decrease of 86,816 for the month.
On the operations side, Spirit operated an average of 40 flights a day, 16 more daily departures than November 2006. AirTran was up 2 departures, and JetBlue increased by 9 daily departures. Delta, Northwest, and US Airways combined for a decrease of 8 daily departures which might seem insignificant but when coupled with the utilization of smaller aircraft, it equated to almost 100,000 available seats for the month.
December traffic should continue to show growth with American’s new service to Port Au Prince, Santo Domingo, San Jose, and the addition of the second half of Allegiant’s operation.
Top 10 market share rankings (includes commuters) and passengers for November 2007 are:
Spirit 15.2% 283,123 Continental 9.2% 170,960
JetBlue 13.7% 256,308 American 7.4% 138,188
Southwest 12.8% 238,710 AirTran 6.3% 117,556
Delta 12.6% 234,060 Northwest 2.4% 45,297
US Airways 9.3% 173,399 United 2.3% 42,363
