PARKING AT FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INT'L AIRPORT  FOR THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND 

During the two week holiday period more than 1 million passengers are expected to travel in and out of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). The busiest travel day is expected to be Saturday, December 23, 2006 when more than 68,000 people are expected to travel through FLL.

To meet the increased demand for parking, FLL will open Overflow Parking Areas beginning Wednesday, December 20, 2006 through January 3, 2007.
As in the past, Overflow Parking Areas will be identified by color for logistics and way-finding purposes. The Overflow Parking Areas will be opened sequentially to meet parking demand. Arriving motorists should follow airport signage on Perimeter Road to the active Overflow parking areas.

Three of the lots (Orange, Green and Blue) will be available to travelers at the established $10.00 “Event Parking” rate. These three overflow parking areas are unpaved and are located on airport property. The temporary lots will have free shuttle service to and from the terminals. A fourth lot (red lot) is paved and is closer to the terminals. This lot will be available at the remote parking rate of $6.00 a day.

Whenever possible, travelers are encouraged to use public transportation or have a friend or relative drop them off at the airport. Parking demand at FLL is expected to peak on Sunday, December 24, 2006. We anticipate more than 16,000 vehicles will park at FLL during the upcoming holiday weekend.

Parking will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Some of the long-term remote lots will fill earlier than others, and travelers should allow one extra hour to be directed to available parking.
Travelers should listen to the Airport Radio Station, 1670 AM, on the way to the airport to get the most current information on available parking. The station can be heard approximately 2 miles from the Airport or can be accessed on our web site at www.fll.net.

November 21, 2006

Earlier this evening AirTran flight 951 from FLL to Baltimore, Md became disabled on taxiway bravo on its way to the runway.
 
This occurred shortly before 9 o'clock this evening.
 
By 9:38 pm all 116 passengers were transported by bus back to Terminal 3, gate E 2.
 
The Broward County Aviation Department , (BCAD), requested three buses to transport all the passengers.
 
There were no reported injuries.
 
All other flights at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport are operating normally and without any additional delays as a result of this incident.
 
It is unknown at this time how long the AirTran passengers will remain at FLL . BCAD operations staff and supervisors are on the scene assisting AirTran. At this time it is unknown whether the passengers will be returning to this aircraft or if another plane will be dispatched.
 
At approximately 10:09 pm the AirTran Boeing 717 was safely returned to the gate.

The Federal Aviation Administration, (FAA) is issuing a new terminal area forecast for the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in January, 2007. It is expected to show about a 10% reduction in operations compared to previous forecasts.  This means that the Environmental Impact Study, which was anticipated to be released in December, will instead by presented by the FAA in late spring 2007.

Policy as mandated by the Broward County Commission on runway configuration required action prior to 2012.  The new forecasts result in a six-year window in the level of operation. Air quality and noise impacts which would have occurred in 2012, will be delayed by approximately six years each.

This will give the County additional time to investigate Master Plan refinements based on the cost of developing terminal facilities.

"The fortunate thing about the new forecast is that it puts the Commission on the right glide path to continue the expansion of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport at a pace which will accommodate the necessary public scrutiny prior to any project being built," said acting Mayor Josephus Eggelletion.   "It doesn't change what we're doing, but it will allow greater scrutiny and public comment."

"Studies have been done, the public has been engaged and it's time to move forward," said Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin.  "To delay the process any further will only postpone the inevitable."

"The forecast is just a model, it's theoretical," said Commissioner John Rodstrom.  "Given this year's decrease who is to say that this trend won't continue in the future?"

"The figures on the airport growth were not surprising to me.  I was surprised, though, to learn the      plan to lengthen the second runway has not been abandoned but will be delayed for six years," said Commissioner Sue Gunzburger.  "I'm concerned about what it means in construction costs but on the other hand in six years the downward trend may continue and we may not need to build the second runway as projected."

Likewise, the Part 150 Study will deal with mitigating to the same level of operations as previously shown even though the year that activity is reached will be later than 2012.

As many as 18,600 cars are expected to park at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Last Thanksgiving weekend, the number of vehicles parked peaked at 18,142. To meet the increased need for parking, the Airport has opened Overflow Parking Areas on a temporary basis.

Airfield maintenance work at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will result in the closure of Runway 9L-27R (North Runway) from 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 14, 2006 to 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 15, 2006.  The closure will allow workers to perform additional runway repairs due to damage caused by the November 1, 2006 aircraft incident.

During the closure period, the airport will use Runway 13-31.  Residents living in northeast Dania and southwest Fort Lauderdale may notice an increase in aircraft operations over their communities.

Federal Aviation Administration Request for Public Comment  
 
In a negotiated settlement of the lawsuit filed by the County against the Federal Aviation Administration ("FAA") with regard to the increased use of Runway 13/31, the FAA agreed to publish a notice of its intent to change the manner in which runways are used under the existing runway use program. The published notice includes a noise analysis of the impact of the expanded runway use, together with the circumstances in which the FAA expects to use these runways.

The FAA notice provides a process for written public comments to be submitted in connection with the expanded use of the runways.  The FAA will consider and respond to all comments submitted by the public. Comments must be received by the FAA on or before November 30, 2006.

November 1, 2006

There was a significant amount of fuel spilled on runway 9L.
 
Specialized crews have been working to remove the spilled fuel. Other teams have been standing by and are now working on repairing a 30' by 75' section of the runway with new asphalt. We're told it takes about 90 minutes to "mill" the area and another 90 minutes to lay new asphalt. Then there is a cooling period necessary for the asphalt to harden. Weather permitting we hope to have the 9-Left runway back in full operation early this evening.  
 
In the meantime, FLL is using runway 13/31 for air carrier operations.  Because runway 13/31 is shorter than 9L, some long haul flights might be required to make a fuel stop enroute to their destination.
 
There have been some flight delays as a result of today's incident.

FLL FUEL SPILL
FORT LAUDERDALE - HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONALAIRPORT

Shortly before 12 noon today, Tuesday, September 5, 2006, there was an incident which resulted in a significant fuel leak at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). The leak occurred in a construction zone adjacent to the Palm and Hibiscus garages in an area off limits to the public.

Shortly after the leak was detected, the “in ground” fuel delivery system at FLL was shut down. Within approximately 90 minutes the fuel leak was repaired and fuel delivery was restored to normal operations.

During the incident, the Palm garage was closed until approximately 3:25 p.m. At the time of the closure approximately 2-thousand vehicles were parked inside the 4-level garage. Shortly after the closure of the Palm garage, BCAD staff was dispatched to all terminals to advise passengers of the situation. An announcement on the airport public address system was made also about the garage closure.

By 3:25 p.m. today, the Palm garage was opened for passengers wishing to depart FLL. At this time the Palm garage is now opento inbound and outboun traffic. Passengers who were not allowed to access the Palm garage were all allowed to depart the garage free of charge. Travelers were not being allowed into the garage for safety reasons since there was a strong smell of jet fuel in the air. The spilled fuel, estimated to be between 2,500 and 3,000 gallons is being removed by a specialized environmental clean-up team. Fortunately the fuel spill never entered the storm sewer system and was contained to a relatively small area.

All commuters planning on coming to FLL are asked to arrive early and allow extra time for parking.

There were no reported injuries associated with the fuel spill.

For the eighth year in a row, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport achieved a “zero-discrepancy” in its annual FAA Certification/Safety Inspection of the Airport conducted July 2006. “This is an exceptional achievement by our dedicated professional staff and to receive a perfect score for the eighth straight year is truly extraordinary”, stated Tom Jargiello, Broward County Aviation Director.

The FAA inspection reviews the Airport’s compliance with the FAA’s airfield safety requirements. It is one of the most comprehensive evaluations that an airport faces from the FAA. The annual inspection is required by the FAA, Southern Region and takes three days to complete. This review concentrates on all aspects of airport safety, including runway and taxiway markings, signage, lighting, safety areas, daily inspections, staff training, airside knowledge, wildlife control, FOD (Foreign Object Debris), fueler training, emergency response, incident command, and overall record management of Airport Rescue and Fire Fighter training.

MEDIA UPDATE: TRAIN DERAILMENT NEAR ENTRANCE ROADWAY AT FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Due to the train derailment on August 22, 2006, portions of Perimeter Road, on the east side of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, remain closed. Clean-up and investigative activities are underway.

Employee and remote parking shuttles have been rerouted and are using US-1 Northbound into the airport.

Travelers using remote parking and employees using the employee parking lot should allow extra time for shuttle delays. Additional shuttle busses have been added to expedite the process. As part of the recovery, there are intermittent train crossings at US-1 and Griffin Road which can also impact the shuttle operation.

Perimeter Road is expected to reopen Thursday morning, August 24, 2006

Currently, there is no impact to the main airport entrance and exit roadways (I-595 and US-1)

All air carrier flight operations are normal.

TRAIN DERAILMENT NEAR ENTRANCE ROADWAY
AT FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

At approximately 12:10 p.m. today, a train derailment occurred at the FEC railroad tracks east of the airport, under the main entrance roadway bridge.

Two trains carrying primarily building supplies collided at a slow speed and some cars derailed. The cargo manifest indicated that there was flammable liquid being transported. BSO Fire Rescue Hazardous Materials teams responded and secured the area.

There were no injuries.

Perimeter Road east of the airport is closed and will re-open in approximately 36 hours. Airport shuttle busses are being rerouted and additional shuttles have been called upon to minimize the impact to travelers. Passengers using remote parking should allow an extra 30 minutes to accommodate any reroutes until Perimeter Road is re-opened.

There is presently a national heightened security level at all US airports as a result of the incident in London, England.

Terrorists have been arrested for plotting to blow up multiple commercial aircraft in the coming days/weeks using some type of liquid explosives.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is under a heightened security level.

All carry on luggage is being searched and all liquids and gels, including toothpaste and mouthwash, are being confiscated at the security checkpoints until further notice. The only exception is baby formula. If anyone has baby formula they may be asked to taste it in front of security officers.

As a result, we are likely to experience long lines at check-in points. Please check with your airline for particular information that might affect your travel plans.

ADDS BIODIESEL HYBRID ELECTRIC BUSSES TO CLEAN AIR SHUTTLE SYSTEM

On March 6, 2006, the Broward County Aviation Department rolled out the first of five new biodiesel hybrid electric busses. The vehicles combine the use of biodiesel fuel with hybrid electric features.

“The introduction of biodiesel hybrid electric busses at the Airport marks the County's next step in providing for cleaner air in Broward County through the incorporation of alternate fuel vehicles into the airport shuttle fleet,” said Aviation Director, Tom Jargiello.

Working with ShuttlePort, the Airport's shuttle service provider, a successful year long pilot project led to last year's decision to power all of the Airport's 52 shuttle busses and trams with biodiesel fuel.

The Airport's road to clean air transportation did not stop with the fleet conversion to biodiesel.

“ Broward County and the Airport remain committed to improving air quality through the integration of these newest technological enhancements. In our continuing effort to enhance the Airport's clean air shuttle system, the County elected to incorporate biodiesel hybrid electric busses into the fleet,” said Jargiello.

The biodiesel hybrid electric busses will be used primarily on the Airport's remote parking route and intra-terminal loop.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
THE BROWARD COUNTY AVIATION DEPARTMENT MOVED TO NEW LOCATION

On March 1, 2006, the Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD) moved to its new facility at 100 Aviation Boulevard, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33315. This move is a temporary relocation of BCAD's administrative offices due to the County's Terminal 4 interior improvement project to the ticket counters, security checkpoint, baggage make-up areas, and federal inspection areas.

BCAD's move to 100 Aviation Boulevard is temporary pending the relocation to a permanent administrative building projected for the 2009 time period.

The new BCAD offices will highlight on-site employee and visitor parking and a news media briefing center.

To access the new BCAD offices from the north, stay on US1 southbound, proceed past the airport entrance, and make a right turn on Griffin Road. Turn right at the next intersection ( Perimeter Road) and then an immediate right heading east. Follow Perimeter Road to the intersection of Aviation Boulevard (approximately ½ mile). Turn left on Aviation Boulevard.

To access the facility from I-95, exit at Griffin Road east and turn left at the last traffic light before the railroad tracks. Then proceed as outlined above.
