Sue Gunzburger, CommissionerSuzanne Gunzburger, Commissioner

Member of:
Broward Cultural Council, Commissioner
Planning Committee, Vice-Chair

Suzanne Gunzburger was first elected to the Broward County Commission in November 1992 by a landslide margin, running on a promise to empower the neighborhoods, protect the environment and clean-up county government. She was easily re-elected in 1994 and 1998. The Sun-Sentinel wrote in 2001 that Sue is "a real reformer," explaining that she is "out there fighting every week, demanding that the county be more accountable. [She] wants insiders to have less influence and the people to have more."

Before her election to the County Commissioner, Sue served as a Hollywood City Commissioner for ten years (1982-1992). She has also worked as a public school classroom teacher, a small businesswoman and a clinical marriage & family counselor. Sue and her husband Gerry, a businessman and chemical engineer, have resided in Hollywood since 1968. Married for over 40 years, Sue and Gerry are the proud parents of three grown children (Ron, Cindy and Judy) and three young grandchildren (Emily, Joshua and Jacob).

Born in Buffalo, New York, Sue was raised in New Jersey and Michigan. She graduated from Wayne State University with a B.S. in Education, and received her Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work from Barry University.

A dedicated community activist, Sue's civic involvement includes the Broward County Planning Council, the Broward Alliance, the Children's Services Board of Broward County, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Broward County Workforce Development Board, the Florida Association of Counties Board of Directors, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, the Broward Crime Commission, the Environmental Coalition of Broward, the National Council of Jewish Women, the Hollywood Kiwanis, the League of Women Voters, the Committee to Ensure Florida's Economic & Environmental Future, and the Concert Association of Florida Board of Directors. She also served on the the Tri-County Commuter Rail Authority (Tri-Rail), the Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Broward Water Advisory Board, the Liberia Economic & Social Development Association, and the Florida League of Cities Board of Directors. Sue also served as a Delegate to the White House Conference on Families in 1980.

Sue served as Chair of the County Commission for 1994-1995 and 1999-2000. She also served as Vice Chair for 1993-1994 and 1998-1999. As Chair, she also automatically served as one of the three members of the Broward County Canvas Board. In that capacity, Sue was actively involved in the 2000 Presidential election recount that brought national attention to our community.
