The Broward Cultural Division is dedicated to enhancing the cultural environment of Broward County through the development of the arts.

Established in 1980 by the Broward County Commission, the Council is the central coordinating agency for the arts, serving as liaison between cultural organizations, government agencies and the private sector.

The 23-member Council recommends programs and the distribution of government and private resources for the visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, museums and festivals.

Each January the Broward Cultural Division adopts a list of goals following a December public workshop. The goals are from the
Community Cultural Plan 2010—the council's ten-year plan. Sub Committees of the council are formed to establish objectives, strategies and budgets to meet the goals.

The goals for 2008 are as follows:

  • Support County Goal #7 by identifying arts funding

Goal #7 - Invest resources in cultural systems and cultural infrastructure that best support our region as a global destination, a center of learning, and a marketplace of diverse communities.

  • Restore tourist tax funding for cultural activities to 8% of 2% (4.3).

  • Ensure cultural facility needs in future County bond issues.

  • Obtain commitment of two local businesses for a Workplace Giving Program.

  • Advocate for the inclusion of cultural facilities and historic preservation
as eligible items for funding in the Redevelopment Capital Program.

  • Identify budget and release RLI for Community Cultural Plan 2020, including
Cultural Tourism, Creative Economy and Public Art.

  • Develop a public relations campaign to advance the image of arts & culture
and with emphasis on minority media.

  • Artist live/work space (construction underway/for 2007 completion).

The Council will continue to work on:
