A DESIGN ARTS GRANTS PROGRAM FUNDED THE DESIGN OF HENRY GRAHAM PARK

Henry Graham Park Design to Highlight African American History
A Broward County Cultural Division Design Arts Program Grant provided funding for the design team of public artist George Gadson, landscape architect Marta Mejia and architect Aron Temkin, RA, to redesign Henry Graham Park, a 19,000-square-foot (1/2 acre) community park located in the Liberia subdivision of Hollywood. 

By reconsidering the park’s organization, function and composition, the design team addressed the community’s need for this public space while elaborating on the community’s history and heritage with the intent of creating a pronounced “sense of place” for the residents. This project was inspired by a desire to highlight key figures that have influenced the fabric of the community, including several notable African Americans who impacted the history regionally and nationally.

Richard Medlock’s -Equestrian Oasis

Celebrating the Solstice at Sunshine Ranches
Equestrian Oasis, Richard Medlock’s 2004 public art installation at the Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park in Southwest Ranches, is a special treat on any day of the year.  But on two particular days, it is truly out of this world!

Medlock designed the work, which comprises a sculpted, horseshoe-shaped berm with boulders and two saddle shaped forms made of concrete, so that it would align with the summer and winter solstices at sunset.  The park was scheduled to host a special observation of the summer solstice on June 20.  If that opportunity escaped you, mark your calendars now for the winter solstice event on December 19. 

Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 SW 148 Ave. in Southwest Ranches.  Other features included in the horseshoe-shaped berm are a water trough with waterfall, a timber hitching post and a planting of sabal palm trees according to Fibonacci's Golden Mean ratio.  To learn more about the installation and the artist, visit http://www.broward.org/arts/padtour/inventory/400.htm.

Miramar Cultural Center/ArtsPark Nears Opening
The goal of the Miramar Cultural Center/ArtsPark – to enrich the lives of community residents and foster the opportunity for creativity in a center “where community and culture converge – is about to be achieved.  

The multifaceted facility is due to open this fall.  When it does, it will be well-prepared to serve the entire community with a wide range of programs and activities for residents and visitors of all ages.  Program offerings and services will include theatrical performances, concerts, arts education programs, classes and youth camps.  Multiple areas within the Cultural Center/ArtsPark will be available to be rented for a variety of special events.  These include:

• 800-seat theater
• 4,500-square-foot banquet hall
• 1,900-square-foot full-service kitchen
• Conference rooms
• Two art galleries
• Art and education studios
• Performance plaza
• Botanical garden featuring Vanishing View, a water sculpture designed by public artist Alison Sky

Pembroke Pines Issues Call to Artists
Artists interested in submitting entries to the City of Pembroke Pines’ 4th Annual Art Competition have until August 22 to provide photos of their artwork, an application and fees.  This fine art competition is open to artists of two- and three-dimensional media.   Cash prizes will be awarded at the reception on October 7.  The exhibition will be shown in the Glass Gallery at City Hall, 10100 Pines Blvd., from September 23 to November 4, 2008.   Photos of artwork, application and fees are due by Friday, August 22, 2008.
