Henry Graham Park Design to Highlight African American History By reconsidering the park’s organization, function and composition, the design team addressed the community’s need for this public space while elaborating on the community’s history and heritage with the intent of creating a pronounced “sense of place” for the residents. This project was inspired by a desire to highlight key figures that have influenced the fabric of the community, including several notable African Americans who impacted the history regionally and nationally.
Celebrating the Solstice at Sunshine Ranches Medlock designed the work, which comprises a sculpted, horseshoe-shaped berm with boulders and two saddle shaped forms made of concrete, so that it would align with the summer and winter solstices at sunset. The park was scheduled to host a special observation of the summer solstice on June 20. If that opportunity escaped you, mark your calendars now for the winter solstice event on December 19. Sunshine Ranches Equestrian Park is located at 5840 SW 148 Ave. in Southwest Ranches. Other features included in the horseshoe-shaped berm are a water trough with waterfall, a timber hitching post and a planting of sabal palm trees according to Fibonacci's Golden Mean ratio.
