Cultural FoundationStatement of Purpose

The Cultural Foundation of Broward, Inc., Foster Fellowship for Emerging Artists program includes direct support grants to promising artists in their formative years committed to advancing their own work and professional careers.  Funds will be awarded to promote the professional growth and recognition of artists living in Broward County.

 

Up to $2,500 will be awarded for specific projects or purchases that will advance the artist's career.  A different discipline will be selected each year for the Fellowship award.

Cultural FoundationExamples of Funding Support

  • PRESENTATION:  The cost of producing a demonstration tape for a composer, a CD, DVD or videocassette for a choreographer, a portfolio for a visual artist, etc.

  • SUPPLIES:  Purchase of supplies and materials necessary for the competition or production of a work which is deemed by the artist to be a pivotal work in his or her career.

  • TRAINING:  Advanced study or coaching that will enhance the artist's abilities

PROJECTS NOT FUNDED: Tuition for on-going academic study, facility rental, or existing indebtedness.

Funds from the Cultural Foundation of Broward are to be used between October 1 and September 30 (project dates.)  Fellowship awards do not require matching funds, but the applicant’s ability to provide some additional project income will enhance the application.  Minority applicants are encouraged to apply.

Cultural FoundationEligibility 

1.  Artists eligible to apply include: Performing artists (music and dance) and visual artists. 

2.  To be eligible, the artist must meet the following criteria:

a.  Must be a practicing artist having resided and worked  within Broward County for one year immediately prior to this application deadline.

b.  Must have documented proof of having performed or exhibited during the past year.

3.  A Fellowship recipient must wait two years after having received funding to apply again.  An individual may receive a Foster Fellowship no more than twice.

NOT ELIGIBLE:  Artists who are not eligible are those who have achieved an advanced level of recognition within their artistic discipline.

Cultural FoundationRequirements

1.  A written Final Report to the Cultural Foundation of Broward is required of each award recipient.  The Final Report will include a description of the project, its impact on the artist's professional growth, and a general financial statement of expended funds or documentation of expenses by the inclusion of receipts.

2.  The Final Report will be due by October 15 of each year.

3.  In all publicity or printed materials related to the artistic project, the recipient must credit the Cultural Foundation of Broward for support.

4.  Recipients are responsible for any tax obligation under federal, state and local laws. (Consult a tax accountant or local IRS office).

5.  Funds may not be used for discharging existing indebtedness nor for tuition for on-going academic study.

Cultural FoundationCriteria

Applicants will be considered on the basis of the following criteria:

1.  Demonstrated artistic ability as evidenced in letters of evaluation from professionals in the discipline.

2.  Evidence of commitment to personal artistic development as demonstrated through efforts to attain performances, exhibits, broadcasts, awards, grants and other professional achievements.

3.  Explanation of how the project will contribute to the artist's professional growth.

4.  Extent of training, education and similar experience.

5.  Demonstration of financial need.

Cultural FoundationHow to Apply (10 steps)

 

1.  Review the Foster Fellowship for Emerging Artist Guidelines.

 

2.  Submit two (2) copies of the completed, typed application. (One application with original signatures and one photocopy.)

 

3.  Attach a copy of your resume to each copy of the application.  Resumes must be typed. 

 

4.  Submit two (2) copies of written supporting materials (ie. letters, articles, reviews, programs and other promotional materials) as evidence of artistic accomplishments and professional achievements.  Please highlight or underline your name on each document so grant reviewers can find you.

 

5.  Submit two (2) copies of documentation proving one-year residency in Broward County (i.e. driver's license, voter registration, vehicle registration or utility bill in your name.) If the grant applicant is a minor, parents or legal guardians must submit this information.

 

6.  Submit two (2) copies of your last year's signed Federal Income Tax Return.  If the grant applicant is a minor, this information must be provided by applicant's parents or legal guardians.

 

7.  Responses to the application questions must be completed within the spaces provided on the form, with the exception of project budget which can extend to no more than one extra page. 

 

DO NOT CREATE YOUR OWN FORMS.

 

8.  Applications, supporting materials and documentation should all be submitted in one package, properly collated and arrive on or before 5:00 PM on May 1 deadline. NO APPLICATION WILL BE ACCEPTED BY FAX AND NO APPLICATION OR SUPPORT MATERIALS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE DEADLINE.

 

9.  Do not attach cover letters or place the application materials in binders.  Applications with support materials may be secured with binder clips.

 

10.  Do not submit applications or documentation materials other than those detailed in these guidelines and on the application.

Cultural FoundationRequired Documentation of Artistic Competence

 

1.  All applicants must submit three to five (3-5) letters of recommendation from recognized authorities or professionals in the applicant's discipline.

 

2.  For applicants in the Visual Arts Submit 6 images in either JPG format or as slides.

CD OF DIGITAL IMAGES: Submit six digital images (JPG formats ONLY). All images should have a resolution within the range of 150 to 300 dpi and must be clearly labeled using a file name and number that corresponds to the *Annotated Image List.

*Annotated Image List (corresponding to the CD of Digital Images) - Include the image name and title of piece, medium, dimensions and date of execution. For images of events installations, include a brief description.


SLIDES: Submit six (6) 35mm slides with a typed list identifying the arts
work, workshops, installations or events. Please label slides according to the following instructions:

  • Place slides in a 9" x 11" clear plastic file sheet with applicants name on each slide.

  • Place an ink dot in the lower left corner of the slide, which will indicate the front and the bottom of the work of art or view.

  • Submit a typed list identifying the slides. Indicate the artist's name, title of the piece, medium, dimensions and date of execution.  For the slides of events or  installations, include a brief description.  Number the slides and the slide list.

3.  For applicants in the Performing Arts:

MUSIC

Composers:  Submit one (1) audio cassette or CD of at least two (2) contrasting works composed during the past three (3) years.  Cassette or CD should be of the highest quality possible and must be labeled with the following information:

- composer's name

- title of work

- performing artists

- date of performance

- length of work and completion date

 

Performing Artists: Submit one (1) audio cassette or CD of at least two (2) contrasting works performed during the past three years.  Cassette or CD should be of the highest quality possible and must be labeled with the following information:

- title of work

- names of other performers or ensembles involved

- length of work and performance dates

THEATER           

Playwright: Submit one (1) full-length play or two (2) one-act plays.  Materials should be labeled with the following information:

- artist's name

- title of work

- date work was complete

Please include a listing of any published or produced plays, or staged/workshop readings, with the names of the publishers and/or producing companies.  Four (4) copies of each script must be included.  All scripts must be typewritten, clearly reproduced and properly collated.

                                                                             

Performer: Submit a two-five minute monologue on ˝” VHS video tape or DVD labeled with the following information

- actor's name

- title and author of work performed

- length of work

- date recorded

It is recommended that the performer also submit an 8" x 10" black and white resume photo in addition to the above information.

 

Artistic Director:  ˝” VHS video tape or DVD of a production directed by the applicant during the past three (3) years.  VHS or DVD format only.  Video tape should be limited to 10 minutes in length, or cue video to the 10 minutes you want the grant panel to review.  Label video tape with the following information:

                       

- director's name

- title and playwright

- performance company or individuals involved

- date and location of rehearsal and production

 

Include any recent press reviews in support materials.

DANCE          

Choreographer: Submit ˝” VHS video cassette or DVD showing examples of original choreography created within the past three

(3) years.  VHS format only.  Video tapes should be limited to 10 minutes in length or cued to the 10 minute segment you want the grant panel to review.  Label video tape with the following information:

- name of choreographer

- title of work

- name of dancer(s) or company

- length of work

- date of completion and performance

 

Performer: Submit ˝” VHS video cassette or DVD of performances which have taken place within the past three (3) years.  VHS or DVD format only.  Video tapes should be limited to 10 minutes in length.  Label video tapes with the following information:

- name of performer

- title of work              

- name of choreographer with date and place of     performance

- name of company, if applicable

It is recommended that the performer also submit an 8" x 10" black and white resume photo in addition to the above information.
