Broward County's Cultural Division Reaches Out to Diverse Arts Communities

In 2004, Broward County's Cultural Division began a series of roundtable discussions with the goal of encouraging and supporting resource utilization amongst underrepresented culturally diverse arts organizations and artists. Since the inception of this initiative, forums have been conducted in Broward County's African-American, Chinese, Haitian, Hispanic, Indian, Brazilian and Native American communities and has resulted in increased awareness and program participation by members of the attending groups.

By attending the Cultural Diversity Artists' Forums, attendees are able to learn first hand about the professional development workshops, grant programs, teaching opportunities and marketing services available through the Division to eligible artists and not-for-profit cultural organizations. The discussions also provide an opportunity for groups to network and share information about their programs, challenges and needs with the Division's staff.

The next Cultural Diversity Artists' Forum will be conducted in partnership with Broward Caribbean Carnival, Inc., the City of Lauderdale Lakes and the Artist's Initiative, Inc. This event will take place on Thursday, March 15, 2007 at 6:30 pm at the Lauderdale Lakes Multipurpose Building located at  4340 NW 36th Street Lauderdale Lakes, FL 33319. This year, Diversity Forum's are also planned to take place in Broward's Polynesian and Turkish communities.

This event is free and open to all interested parties. To register please click here

Indiana University's Fundraising School to Offer a Two Day Workshop

Interpersonal Communication for Fundraising
March 29 and 30, 2007; 8:30 AM - 5:00PM

Building long-term relationships with donors is one of the most important and powerful concepts behind fundraising; understanding potential donors is critical when motivating them to give to your organization. Knowing how they think and act gives you the power to turn your donors into lasting, dedicated advocates of your nonprofit.

This two-day advanced course focuses on communication styles theory, a framework for understanding your own style of communication, and more importantly those of potential donors. You will learn how to communicate most effectively with prospective donors in ways that fit their styles.

Presented by The Fundraising School associated with The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. The Center on Philanthropy is a leading academic program that increases the understanding of philanthropy and improves its practice through teaching, research, public service and public affairs activities throughout the world. Dedicated to the advancement of ethical fundraising, The Fundraising School helps thousands of fundraising professionals around the world achieve new levels of success, and is the only international fundraising education program housed within a university. For individual attention, class size is limited to 40 participants to allow students the opportunity to have maximum interaction with the instructors and with the other participants.

Interpersonal Communication for Fundraising will be presented at ArtServe, Inc. 1350 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304. This workshop is designed for not-for-profit managers and development staff who must raise funds, as well as oversee operations; board members and volunteers; new development professionals who want a thorough foundation for success; and seasoned development professionals who wish to hone their skills. The Fundraising School faculty creates a vibrant, hands-on learning atmosphere to make the courses rich and enjoyable.

GRANTS TALK

Q: How do I apply for a grant from the Broward Cultural Division?

A: The first step in the granting process is completing the Determination of Eligibility Form and returning it and the required documents to Adriane Clarke, grants specialist via FAX; 954-357-5769 or by mail 100 S. Andrews Avenue, 6th Floor,  Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33301.

Q: Does my organization have to be based in Broward County to be eligible for   Broward County Cultural Division funding?

A: Most of the Grant Programs, with the exception of the Regional Organization Program, are designed to serve Broward County-based individual artists and cultural not-for-profit organizations with a corporate address in Broward.

Q: What types of grants does the Broward County Cultural Division offer?

A: Broward County's Cultural Division offers two types of grant funding opportunities; project grants and general operating grants. Project grants fund complete cultural projects while general operating funds can be used to fund an organization's complete season of cultural programming.

The Mini-Grant, Challenge Grant, Education and Community Development, Cultural Tourism and Design Arts programs are project grants; while the Cultural Diversity, General Operating, Major Cultural Institution and Regional Organization programs are general operating grants.

Q: If I am approved for funding, when will I receive my award?

Currently all of the Broward Cultural Divsion's grant programs are paid on a reimbursement basis. This is important to know for smaller organizations whose cash flow may be limited. This means your grant funds are not paid to you in advance, instead, they are paid to you after you provide the services outlined in your application.
