Biography
Florida artist, Richard Heipp, employed a classic silhouette cut-out, also known as "the black arts", to illustrate the notion of the library impact on the community it serves. Relating to the physical layout of the library, on an expanse of 20 glass windows about 70 feet long, the artwork's images connect the children's section (on the left side) to the reference section (in the center) to the adult fiction (on the far right).  The pieces are water jet cut, powder coated 1/4" 6061T aluminum panels, of 18 art components hinged on 20 glass windows.
 
Artist Statement
"In all of my public art projects I attempt to create a set of visual and conceptual 'visual language' components that speak directly to patrons of the facility making the project user specific, as well as site specific. My research for this project evolved to focus on more universal topics surrounding reading, research, illustration and the text itself. I elected to employ a classic silhouette motif (also known as "the black arts"). The major inspirations for the silhouette forms were delivered from the timeless illustrations of the English illustrator/artist Arthur Rackham. The Library layout suggested my motivation for the project's design: the children's section to the left, moving to reference in the central area, progressing to adult fiction on the far right. I wanted to visually and conceptually address the libraries use and impact on the community by creating visual metaphors references literary themes surrounding a multicultural notion of reading through myth and fable, combined with notions of astronomy and flight."
