Harry Reese

Biography

Harry Reese makes prints, artists’ books, paintings, and public art installations. In partnership with Sandra Liddell Reese, he publishes limited edition prints and books for their Turkey Press imprint. Featuring handmade paper, typography and design, traditional and experimental prints, innovative book structures, and collaborations with artists and poets, Turkey Press publications are collected in major museums and libraries. Its archives were purchased by the Getty Center in 1992. Recent exhibitions include diverse venues such as the Luis Angel Arango Library (Bogotá, Colombia), Deutsches Bucherei (Leipzig, Germany), Instituto de Artes Graficos (Oaxaca, Mexico), Santa Monica Museum of Art (Santa Monica, CA), Sun Valley Center for the Arts (Ketchum, Idaho), and Arts of the Book Collection (Yale University). He received his Master of Arts degree from Brown University.

At the Hollywood Community Library, Harry Reese and Joel Sherman created the term “Grus Pacifica” or “Crane of peace” to honor the world tradition of the folded paper cranes and to celebrate the extraordinary conservation efforts of the International Crane Foundation, Operation Migration, and the U. S. Wildlife Service (among many others) in saving the Whooping Cranes population and in serving as a model of reverence for life on this planet.

Artist Statement

"Over 2000 origami cranes were folded from our handmade paper, by our team, throughout the process of assembling the circle.

Names of known extinct species of birds were printed on paper that we handmade from fibers that are similar to those found in habitats of Whooping Cranes – hemp, abaca (banana leaf), cattail, raw organic pigments. The paper was handmade in our studio at the University of California, Santa Barbara."
