Integrated Art - Installation w/multiple components

26,200 sq ft

1998

Port Everglades

Description:
Broward-based artist Tobey Archer utilizes color and light to enhance the passenger's embarkation/debarkation experience and to promote more efficient passenger flow. Ever changing fiberoptic patterns, neon column capitals at the top of the support columns and painted walls and doorways, complete the transformation of the space. This integrated artwork uses one mile long of fiber optic cable on the ceiling to unify the cavernous 26,200 sq. ft. of Terminal 2 of the Port. Viewing is limited by Port passengers, or by appointment only.

Viewing is by appointment only, call 954-523-3404

Artist Statement:
"The integrated design comprising "Calypso", a fiberoptic artwork found on the ceiling of the Great Hall of Port Everglades, Terminal 2, "Waves", a fiberoptic sculpture on the North wall of Terminal 2, the gem-tone color scheme, and the neon and white plexiglass column capitals create a total environment. The gaiety of the Terminal is intended to reduce the passenger's sense of stress associated with the travel and provide a positive transition between the delights of Fort Lauderdale and the pampered and exciting experience of the Caribbean cruise. The use of warm tones on the walls is meant to provide a more intimate feeling within a cavernous space. The addition of capitals to the structural columns is done to increase the sense of elegance in a location which is predominately industrial."
