Plume Hunt

Steven Clippinger

Plume Hunt

Painting - Acrylic

48in X 72in

1980

South Regional Courthouse

Description:
Paying homage to the rich culture of the Native American, Clippinger illustrated a ritual of plume hunt practiced by the Seminole Indians in this acrylic mixed medium work. The imageries were raised and sculpted with modeling paste mixed with sand. Flora motifs were incorporated as boarder design for the section of birds, and the depiction of dancing figures celebrating the event reminisced historic cave painting. The artwork is installed on the second floor of the courthouse.

Artist Statement:
"In this work, I depict the traditional custom of the plume hunt practiced by the Seminole Indians. The work incorporates the natural flora and fauna from South Florida' s past."
