Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport

Description:
A grouping of three sets of fiberoptic light sculpture depicting themes of Bird, Fish and Dolphin. The fiberoptic medium with its constant changing of colored light enlivens the long back wall of the Baggage Claim to welcome travelers. The artwork is installed at Terminal 2, Arrival Level.

Artist Statement:
"The images which I have chosen for the installation, "Let the Waters Teem with Living Creatures, and Let Birds Fly above the Earth", are universal, yet evoke the spirit of Southern Florida. Although the work is abstract, its theme is specific to the site and to its function of welcoming travelers. The horizontal and curvilinear design relates to the scale of the wall. Heretofore, I have worked in both fluorescent and neon light, emphasizing the interaction of the light and color with the painted surface. In this installation, I have chosen to use fiberoptics rather than neon or fluorescent light. With fiberoptics, I have been able to create a continuous flow of light and changing colors surrounding the silhouettes of the fish and the fowl. This flow accords with the functional flow of the baggage conveyor. Fiberoptic cable is, as well, a safe source of light and therefore, is particularly appropriate for a site- specific installation physically accessible to the public."
