Integrated Art - Landscape Design w/Sculptural Element

1994

Broward Judicial Complex

Description:
South Florida artist Barbara Neijna and New York artist Ned Smyth collaborated to design this sculptural park situated on the north side of the Judicial Complex. Bordering on the south bank of New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale, the park encompasses many geometric and monumental sculptural elements made of coral rock and nestled among lush sub-tropical landscapes: - a sphere of 16 feet diameter - a disk of 26 feet diameter by 2 feet thickness - an inverted cone of 32 feet in height by 28 feet diameter, covered by vines - five columns of 8 feet in height - two seating walls and several benches offer a favorite area of "river watching" Note: This artwork was chosen among four works from the Broward County Public Art & Design Collection as 'the world's finest artwork', published by Australia's 'Images Publishing's - 'Designing the World's Best Public Art.'

Artist Statement:
"The desired appearance of this Sculptural Park is one of lushness and monumentality. These large sculptural objects are to act as counterpoints to landscape. The Sculptural Park is to resonate a sense of awe and harmony to those who use it."
