Ken Uyemura

Moonscape

Textile - Tapestry

112in X 60in

1980

South Regional Courthouse

Description:
After working extensively in the Far East as designer and consultant for the U.S. State Department sponsored programs, Uyemura brought back with him an aesthetic refinement that translates into a style of geometric design with intrinsic simplicity in his tapestry making. A deep blue circle is looming over a series of pyramid shapes which could suggest landscape elements on a flat plain. This restrained textile artwork conveying reverence and meditation is installed on a stairwell wall leading to the second floor of the courthouse.

Artist Statement:
"Every now and again, after struggling with one's ideas and problems, one is confronted with a finished piece which opens up new areas of thought and foretells of emerging forms and images yet unrelated. This is what artists live for."
