Imagination Encircles The World

Mural - Painted Mural

5ft X 120ft X 1ft

2003

Stirling Road Branch Library

Description:
Upon entering into the foyer of the library, one encounters the artwork installed on a long wall above the information desk. A mixed media work with cedar wood sculptural elements placed in front of the painted canvas which is mounted directly onto the wall. Being site specific, the interlocking carved biomorphic forms provide an organic and handmade quality that softens the building's angular modernist architecture. Using numerous visual appropriational devices, the artwork contains themes that address the historical role of a 21st century library. Also, the artwork serves to connect the two parts of the Library together: children and adult sections.

Artist Statement:
"Working closely with the architect, Julio Webel of MC Harry Associates, I have produced a work that belongs in its environment. My goal, since beginning this piece three years ago, was to use art to convey information describing what I may or may not expect from a library - a multiplicity of things to seek out and discover. Utilizing various graphic approaches, from figurative to abstract, and in two and three dimensions, I have created an intertwined stream of styles, subjects and materials that should speak to the viewer on different levels. For a library this is essential. Through this project, I have introduced into my work the biomorphic qualities of dimensional carving, a most rewarding process."
