Boulder Seats Earth Bowl
The Floating Gazebo Fossil Path
The Preserve & Plaques

Artists Mags Harries and Lajos Héder designed this earthwork sculpture utilizing massive coral rock boulders and limestone fill harvested from park site excavation. The result is a special place for passive recreation and quiet contemplation of the natural environment and the passage of time as revealed in these fossil-laden boulders. Features include the Earth Bowl (an 18-foot-high/100 foot diameter circular, sodded seating area) and several giant scale boulder seats along the Crescent Path. The path, which parallels the Butterfly Bank, displays examples of contemporary Fossil Imprints. Artist designed landscaping also enhances the entire earthwork site.

Opposite the Earth Bowl, the artists established an 80-ft-diameter Preserve, keeping the biodiversity of plant species found at the start of park construction, as an exhibit with Interpretive Signage. From the Earth Bowl, visitors can also experience circular rings in the lake, created by a hand-operated agitator device located in the Floating Gazebo Landing.

Earth Bowl
A 100' diameter, gently bowl-shaped lawn is tilted so that it is about 12' higher in the back than in the front.  The back and sides are supported by a rip-rap of large coral boulders that have been excavated from the park site.

Boulder Seats
There are four groupings of large coral boulders placed on the grass which have been carved into seats.  The boulders are particularly rich with coral fossils and the cuts reveal the shapes and structures of the fossils.  In order to limit discoloration and fungal growth the boulder seating groups and the 4 cut seats around the Earth Bowl were coated with sealer.  Go back to top of page

The Floating Gazebo
The Floating Gazebo is a structure connected to the land and the path near the Earth Bowl and floats upon the water.
The Gazebo is anchored to 2 concrete piers and also features a floatation ring.  The floor is made of aluminum grill which creates a transparency and feeling of floating above the water.  Go back to top of page

The Time Path with Fossil Inserts
The concrete pathway is 5' wide and 530' long and features imprints of grasses and reeds harvested from the site.  There are also artist-created fossil inserts depicting parts of alligators, fish, clams and butterflies.  Text regarding the span of time was then sandblasted into the pathway.

The Preserve & Plaques
The 80' diameter circular preserve is a piece of the original site that was maintained un-disturbed throughout the construction process.  Then a moat was dug around the perimeter of the preserve to maintain the wetlands environment.  A collection of 26 plaques featuring the plants, native to the preserve, and their traditional uses is mounted along aluminum railing.
